Justin Fields felt he was about to have an upturn in his career after he became the starting quarterback of the New York Jets. After losing out on the job last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, this was a chance to prove to the football world that he belongs.

In the opening game against his former team, the 26-year-old performed decently. Since then, his form nosedived amidst injuries and a lack of meaningful connections with his receivers.

No wonder, after their previous loss to the Carolina Panthers, owner Woody Johnson was critical of his quarterback and claimed that the team’s struggles were squarely his to blame.

In Week 8, head coach Aaron Glenn decided to give his starting QB another chance, and this time, the former Ohio State star was decent, throwing for 244 yards and 1 touchdown.

That effort saw the Jets break their 0-7 losing streak and win their first game of the season. While reflecting on the win and what happened to be one of his best performances, Justin Fields said this:

I’m going to get pretty vulnerable right here. This week, I found myself in my closet crying on the ground, lying down. Not because of the hardships, not because of the troubles. I felt like I was built to handle that, and I was put in place to handle this situation.

The Georgia native went on to reveal that he received encouraging texts from his sister and stepmother. In addition to that, the emotional QB revealed that he had been praying for one win, and it came.

Alex Smith lashes out at Woody Johnson for criticism of Justin Fields

Woody Johnson‘s criticisms about Justin Fields went viral as no one expected the billionaire to place all the blame on his young starting quarterback. Former signal-caller Alex Smith, while on ESPN’s NFL Countdown, lashed out at the Jets owner.

This is absurd… It is impossible to overcome dysfunctional ownership… Maybe the problem is you, Woody. Maybe you look in the mirror. You have the longest playoff drought in all of the NFL. It starts at the top, and it trickles down. This is cowardly.

Alex Smith said

The former Kansas City Chiefs QB reiterated that he knows what it is to play for a dysfunctional owner, and Johnson is what one such owner looks like.

Smith pointed out that under his stewardship, the Jets have struggled mightily. Therefore, he believes it was ‘cowardly’ of him to place the blame on Justin Fields.

Aaron Glenn speaks after winning first game as head coach

When the clock ticked down to 00:00, the New York Jets celebrated their first win of the season. Since it was the first win of his career as a head coach, Aaron Glenn was ecstatic while speaking to the media.

It’s very, very exciting. I told my guys at halftime, these are the games that I really can tell the mental and physical toughness of our team. The grit that we’ve been talking about that we have to play with to win these games.

Aaron Glenn said

It seems his halftime speech worked, as the Jets outscored the Cincinnati Bengals 26 to 14 in the second half. They now go into their bye week and will return on November 9th to play the lackluster Cleveland Browns.
