The New York Jets have moved on from Aaron Rodgers. The team has now picked Justin Fields to reinvigorate the energy of a franchise that witnessed significant changes over the last year. This news comes just hours after reports have surfaced that the Pittsburgh Steelers are expressing a strong interest in signing Aaron Rodgers to be their starting quarterback.
Justin Fields will earn $40 million over the next two years as per Adam Schefter of ESPN. The new-look Jets attempted to sign him for lesser, but his agent was able to get him a competitive deal. While the number may seem to be big, in the perspective of the quarterback market, Fields is being paid the average sum.
He had the most effective season of his career through 10 games played this season. Fields completed 65.8% of his passes for 1,106 yards, threw for 5 touchfowns, and 1 interception. He put his legs to use as he went on to stack 289 yards and 5 touchdowns on 62 carries.
Fields showed that he can shine in an organization that values him and provides him with the necessary support. His future with the Steelers hung in the balance amidst murmurs of the team attempting to sign Aaron Rodgers.
Aaron Glenn and the Jets did not wish to gamble with the draft
The Jets’ decision to sign a QB was surprising, as all indications pointed to them going all-in on the draft. However, it seems like they will use their first-round pick to improve their offensive line rather than draft a quarterback.
HC Aaron Glenn sees potential in Fields. Having gone up against him while he was on the Bears, Glenn understands the kind of environment to create for him to thrive in.

The realistic expectations from the Jets will be to make the playoffs. This team cannot be viewed as a Super Bowl caliber team. Fields will still be behind a mediocre O-line. That is a problem he has faced throughout his career. However, he will have a reliable wide receiver in Garrett Wilson.
It will be interesting to see how Aaron Glenn will make use of Fields. In all likelihood, the HC is going to make full use of his dual-threat capabilities to throw the ball and rush.
Justin Fields’ new contract is considered a bit overvalued by fans who are not yet sold on him. The contract guarantees him $30 million over two years and the rest will be in the form of incentives and bonuses. Here’s how fans reacted to the Jets’ signing on X.

With the Jets finding Rodgers’ replacement, it is almost certain that the Steelers will land Aaron Rodgers. Justin Fields is in the perfect spot because as an underdog, he lands on a team that does not have much expectations riding on them. The Jets’ job is a valuable second chance for him which he will need to make the most out of.
