Justin Gaethje remains one of the UFC’s most entertaining fighters, thanks to his explosive striking and action-packed bouts. Another major test now awaits as he prepares to face Ilia Topuria at UFC Freedom 250. The lightweight title clash is set to take place on the White House South Lawn. Ahead of the historic event, longtime coach Trevor Wittman revealed how their camp is preparing for the outdoor conditions.
Wittman has been a key figure in Gaethje’s career for more than a decade, with the pair training together at ONX Sports in Colorado. Their partnership began after Gaethje’s wrestling career at the University of Northern Colorado. Since then, Wittman has helped shape ‘The Highlight’ into one of MMA’s most effective strikers. Their long-standing relationship remains crucial ahead of UFC Freedom 250.
UFC Freedom 250 is set for the White House South Lawn in Washington, D.C. The card will take place beneath the massive “Claw” lighting structure with the White House as the backdrop. Unlike a traditional arena show, fighters will compete outdoors and face the elements. With heat and humidity expected to be factors, Wittman recently discussed Gaethje’s preparation for those extreme challenges.
We’re also involving the sauna in between the workouts to deal with the heat. Washington, D.C. is super humid. I’ve been out there a lot, and in the summers it gets really hot. Main card goes on at 8 o’clock, so thank God it’ll be a touch cooler if we’re gonna be dealing with bugs. We’re preparing for the unexpected. We’ve added sauna; we started by putting him in the sauna before his workouts. Now we’re getting his heart rate up before he goes into the sauna, and when he gets out, he’s dealing with these hard workouts.

The outdoor setting has raised concerns among several figures in the MMA community. Commentator Joe Rogan has expressed a preference for fights in controlled environments rather than open-air venues. Questions have centered on weather and other factors that could affect competition. Despite that, UFC CEO Dana White has said the UFC is addressing every variable and moving forward with confidence.
White has also acknowledged that the unique venue presents challenges beyond heat and humidity. One issue he recently highlighted involved large numbers of gnats and other insects around the South Lawn. The UFC CEO said the promotion has already discussed potential solutions to minimize disruption. He also noted that lightning remains the only weather scenario that could temporarily delay the event.
As ‘The Highlight’ prepares for UFC Freedom 250, Trevor Wittman’s influence remains as important as ever. The veteran coach has guided him through some of the biggest fights of his career. Wittman has also coached former UFC champions Kamaru Usman and Rose Namajunas. That experience could prove valuable as Justin Gaethje faces the lightweight champion on the White House South Lawn.
Ilia Topuria plans to predict Justin Gaethje’s offense at UFC Freedom 250
Ilia Topuria is undoubtedly one of the most dangerous power punchers in the UFC today. The Spaniard has built a reputation as one of the promotion’s best boxers through a remarkable run of performances. Many regard his recent stretch as one of the greatest three-fight streaks in UFC history. During that span, Topuria scored knockout victories over Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway, and Charles Oliveira.

However, what separates Topuria from many rivals is the preparation that takes place before each fight. His strategic planning and film study have become major factors behind his success inside the Octagon. Justin Gaethje presents a difficult challenge, bringing far more experience at the lightweight limit. Ahead of UFC Freedom 250, the Georgian-Spanish star recently explained how he is approaching the matchup.
Once we got the confirmation we were fighting Justin, the first thing I’d do with my team, we’d sit down infront of the screen and we’d go in like Justin’s team. Like, we have to advise Justin how he has to fight against Ilia and we start watching my fights, from the perspective of Justin’s team. We do the strategy of Justin, and based off Justin’s strategy, we make our strategy.

Topuria’s analysis also highlighted the unique challenge Gaethje presents at lightweight. The champion pointed to Justin Gaethje’s unusual striking style and unpredictable movements as difficult traits to prepare for. He noted that facing such an unconventional opponent requires added attention during camp. Those comments further underscore his respect for the interim champion ahead of their fight.
