Vampire? Sci-fi Villain? Justin Herbert walked into the Chargers’ training camp with a bold new gear addition. The Chargers’ quarterback gave major Twilight meets Star Wars vibes as he sported brand new red contacts that are supposed to enhance his on-field vision.

The lenses serve a purpose beyond a fashion statement. The quarterback, known for his dark locks and blue eyes, told ESPN that the lens provides him protection from ultraviolet rays. Herbert mentioned that he had experimented with a tinted visor on his helmet a few years back. The tinted visor is something many players opt for, but he admitted that he disliked constantly having to wipe it clean.

In a media availability, Herbert also admitted that he intended to wear them throughout the season, although he noted that he needed to double-check the legality of that. He also shared anecdotes from the training field and the reactions from his teammates.

He admitted that the new gear has surprised a few. Herbert also added that there were some Dragon Ball Z references amid some hoots from his teammates:

I didn’t have to squint nearly as much. When I stepped into the huddle, I think some of the guys were a little surprised. Think they were like, ‘Oh, we’re gonna score’.

The Chargers started their training camp two days ago as they prepare for the new season. The Chargers start their preseason towards the end of the season against the Detroit Lions at the Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio.

Justin Herbert’s new eyes might be the talk of the town; however, it shouldn’t put a sheath on his bomb throw from the first day at camp. Herbert made his first touchdown in the season camp to a surprising name, Jalen Reagor, and announced that the Chargers are back to threaten the AFC West.

Herbert dropped the ball over the defender’s shoulder with a neat trajectory and touch into Reagor’s hands. The touchdown was a deja vu to the classic Herbert style: smooth release, clean footwork amid pressure.

Justin Herbert also heaped praise on the former first-rounder Reagor after the training camp:

I think he does everything really well. He’s one of those guys, whether it’s quick game or intermediate or the deep balls like that, he’s definitely fast enough to take the top off and he’s such a great rute runner that he’s able to beat man coverages. Another guy you feel comfortable going to whether it’s zone or man. He just finds a way to get open.

Herbert also stayed dialed in during red-zone 7-on-7 work, threading a 10-yard touchdown pass to rookie wideout KeAndre Lambert-Smith in the back of the end zone.

The Chargers, led by Jim Harbaugh, who took over the Blues and Yellows last season, are more offensively boosted coming into the new season. The Chargers have added Mekhi Becton and re-signed Bradley Bozeman in the offseason to provide more protection for Herbert. The rightside tandem of Bozeman and Joe Alt seemed to be working.

However, the left side tackle and center position remained undecided. On Day 1 of the Chargers, Bozeman and Zion Johnson played at the center and guard, while the positions flipped on the second day. The wide receiver slot is also kind of a mess right now with Mike Williams retiring and Najee Harris sustaining a fireworks accident.
