Justin Herbert played a handful of snaps over the weekend in the Los Angeles Chargers’ preseason defeat to the Rams. Later, the star quarterback was seen with famous singer Madison Beer in downtown LA.

However, has anyone wondered what kept Herbert busy when the NFL was on break? The answer is chess. He developed a taste for the age-old game after one of his teammates handed him the beating of a lifetime.

Two-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Rashawn Slater asked Herbert for a round of chess when the Chargers were in Carolina to play the Panthers.

Herbert logged into Chess, learned the game, and was better prepared for his next bout with Slater. He defeated Slater and later became the chess guy in the Chargers locker room.

Linebacker Troy Dye confirmed the rumors.

Herbert is loved and respected by his teammates and the Chargers fans, but the wounds of the 2024-25 playoff loss are still fresh. Jim Harbaugh delivered postseason football in his debut campaign as head coach, and they were favorites to beat the Houston Texans in the wild-card round.

Herbert threw four interceptions and turned the ball over five times, which led to a 32-12 defeat. He ended the year with 65.9% pass completion for 3870 yards, 23 touchdowns, and only 3 interceptions (the league’s best 0.6 TD/INT ratio).

The Chargers retained several receivers from last year, including Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston, and Tre’ Harris. Harbaugh re-signed Pro Bowl wideout Keenan Allen and drafted highly regarded youngster KeAndre Lambert-Smith.

At quarterback, Trey Lance has had a resurgence since switching from Dallas to LA. In two preseason games, the former first-rounder threw 14 completions for 170+ yards.

The Chargers end their preseason venture by traveling to the Bay Area to face the San Francisco 49ers.
