Justin Herbert thrilled to play under new Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh: “He’s a guy that everyone wants to follow”

After an abysmal 5-12 season, the Chargers are hoping the Jim Harbaugh-Justin Herbert combination will bring some joy to the Bolts fans.

When Jim Harbaugh was announced as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers earlier this year, almost every analyst equivocally claimed that Justin Herbert now has nowhere to hide. Herbert’s trajectory has only been going down since a fast start in his rookie year.

The addition was Harbaugh could provide that talismanic boost that the Chargers required. After conquering college football with Michigan last season, he returned to the NFL to wrap up some unfinished business.

Justin Herbert said that it’s an honor to play for Harbaugh who had a 44-19-1 record as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.

He's done such a great job… He's won wherever he's at [and] he's a guy that everyone wants to follow and play for.

Being a former quarterback and a Chargers player, Harbaugh understands the culture of the organization. However, he still has his own ways of conducting business. Herbert revealed that the 60-year-old likes to get his hands dirty during training.

It's a cool experience [really]… Whether we're pulling sleds, he expects to be the fastest or to pull the furthest, and when we're carrying those med balls, he's wanting [wants] to go the furthest.

It certainly motivates the players, especially the undrafted players and the rookies who can derive inspiration from their coach. Even veterans like Khalil Mack had the same opinion about Harbaugh.

Can Jim Harbaugh be the answer to Justin Herbert’s problems?

Harbaugh played 14 seasons as a quarterback in the NFL. So, he understands the ins and outs of the position. Under his tutelage, Nevada graduate and second-round pick Colin Kaepernick who only won 5 games in 16 appearances, led the 49ers to a Super Bowl berth in 2013.

Herbert is miles better compared to Kaepernick. In the initial weeks after taking over from Brandon Staley as head coach, Harbaugh claimed that the Oregon graduate was a rare Jewel in the NFL. His faith strengthened seeing Herbert’s accuracy with the ball and the power of his right arm.

Harbaugh’s presence in the Chargers locker room will do wonders.

He’s done it as a coach and played at a high level for so long. Any advice like that is awesome. It’s great for us.

The 26-year-old needs to use Harbaugh’s experience as guidance for success. So far, his stint in the NFL has been average at best with more losses compared to wins (30-32) and just one playoff game in four years. There’s a chip on his shoulder because of the mammoth $50 million-a-year salary package.
