Justin Herbert’s legacy as an elite quarterback was called into question after poor displays in the playoffs. Herbert required a solid start to the 2025 season, but he had to outperform Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, which is easier said than done.
USA Today’s sports books gave the Chiefs -175 odds to grab the first win of the season. The Chargers, on the other hand, were +145 before the kickoff.
Herbert proved the Vegas odds wrong by completing 25 passes from 34 attempts for 318 yards and three touchdowns. He connected with wide receiver Quentin Johnston on five occasions and two scores, while veteran Keenan Allen, who re-signed with the Chargers in the offseason, caught 7 for 69 and one score.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh gave debuts to rookie Omarion Hampton and their summer acquisition, Najee Harris. Hampton rushed 15 for 48 yards, and Harris, who has been dealing with bad eyesight, capped off only one carry. Herbert placed second on the rushing chart with 7 carries for 32 yards.

Justin Herbert upsets the Chiefs with a commanding opening day performance
Herbert holds several NFL records to his name. Last year, the 27-year-old leaped ahead of Mahomes and Lamar Jackson with the most passing yards completed in their first five seasons in the league.

The Chargers finished second in the West behind the Chiefs. It set up a wildcard encounter against the Houston Texans.
Despite throwing just three interceptions in 17 games during the regular season, Herbert threw 4 INTs and turned the ball over one additional time, suffering a 32-12 defeat.
Before the Chiefs’ fixture in Brazil, retired NFL athlete turned ESPN analyst Ryan Clark called out Herbert for failing to deliver in the postseason.
Justin Herbert, whenever it matters, has been terrible. Justin Herbert didn’t win big games in college as talented as he was. Justin Herbert, in two games in the playoffs, you lose a 27-0 lead. You throw four interceptions against the Texans. I think Justin Herbert is extremely talented… [However] if something serious is happening, you don’t bring him over because he’s not responsible, accountable, and you can’t depend on him.
Ryan Clark said (H/T: The Cold Wire)
Herbert replied to Clark’s criticism with a 142.33 QBR and 73% completion outing.

Then went and paid him more than Herbert the second they got the chance. pic.twitter.com/YklrElDQ3B
I thought #JustinHerbert was tremendous tonight… not that I’m surprised bc we see a lot of these performances from him, but I didn’t think he made many mistakes tonight while dropping dimes all over the place! #QuentinJohnston stepped up big time… if he can be consistent like…

Justin Herbert is THE story—maybe his best performance ever after last year’s 4-INT playoff game….Couldn’t ask for a better start!!

Harbaugh? Brilliant game-plan & adjustments.
And finally, they closed out Kansas City.
Chargers can’t start the season any better.
“Oooh look at me, I’m a 6’6” NFL quarterback on a $262 million contract. I just won a band for band with Pat Mahomes and I’m dating Madison Beer”

The Chiefs completed the double over the Chargers in 2024. In fact, they were on a four-game winning streak, which ended in South America.
Harbaugh is now 6 for 6 in his opening day fixtures in the NFL, and analyst Phil Mackey noted that the veteran now has the 5th highest win percentage of any NFL coach in history.

After the game ended, Harbaugh thanked the Brazilian fans.
Brazil now has a special place in my heart.
Jim Harbough said
"Brasil agora tem um lugar especial no meu coração", disse Jim Harbaugh sobre a atmosfera da partida e a vitória sobre o Chiefs. Ele elogiou também o gramado da Neo Química Arena. pic.twitter.com/F39UaphKtT

The job is not finished, though. It has only begun for both teams. Herbert and Co. will hit the road once more to Sin City and face the Las Vegas Raiders. In the same week, the Chiefs host the defending world champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, who defeated the Dallas Cowboys in their opening fixture.
