Justin Herbert‘s playoff misery continued on Sunday (January 11) when the Los Angeles Chargers faced off against the New England Patriots at Foxborough. Herbert didn’t throw any touchdowns, fumbled the ball twice, and recorded the second-worst (25.0) quarterback rating in the postseason.

The Pro Bowl signal caller was the main catalyst for the Chargers’ squeezing into the playoffs. He threw for 3727 yards and 26 touchdowns, but also threw 13 interceptions in 16 games. Herbert and the Chargers finished second in the AFC West, and as the seventh seed, they drew against the Patriots, who won their division to become the second seed.

Despite being the more experienced quarterback compared to the Patriots’ QB Drake Maye, the Chargers started as the underdogs in Boston. The brainiacs in Vegas proved right for once. The Patriots’ defense sacked Herbert 6 times, forced a turnover, and had five punts. He finished with 19 completions from 31 pass attempts for 159 yards, zero touchdowns, and a quarterback rating of 25.0.

Fans on social media call out Justin Herbert for a historically poor performance in the playoff loss against the Patriots

Head coach Jim Harbaugh rested some of the starters in Week 18, including Herbert, as they had already qualified for the playoffs. Despite enjoying a week off and preparing for the Patriots, Herbert failed to deliver.

The Chargers only managed to score three points on offense, which came from the cleats of Cameron Dicker in the first quarter. It ended 16-3. Herbert’s playoff tally fell to 0-3.

In 2022, the Jacksonville Jaguars handed him his first-ever playoff heartbreak. The Chargers lost by just one point. Two years later, Herbert conceded four interceptions in a 32-12 loss to the Houston Texans. Fans expect more from a quarterback making over $50 million a year. Just two touchdowns and seven turnovers, including four interceptions, isn’t cutting it.

The wait goes on for that elusive playoff win for Herbert. Speaking with reporters post-game, he apologized to the defense for the loss.

I didn’t play well enough and didn’t make any plays… We let the defense down.

Herbert’s numbers are concerning for sure, but he played behind a historically bad offensive line. Pro Football Focus ranked the Chargers’ O-line as the third-worst in the regular season. Without Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater, Herbert’s protection took a big hit. Regardless, the Chargers are out of the playoffs while the Patriots wait for their next opponent in the divisional round.
