On Sunday, former World No.1 Justin Thomas found himself with a chance to end his winless streak. The golfer last tasted success at the PGA Championship in 2022. At The American Express, Thomas once again came close to winning but fell agonizingly short once again.

The two-time major champion started off the final round strongly. He was 6-under par for the day through his first 11 holes.

However, after that he failed to make any birdies. A series of pars on the back nine saw him finish the round 6-under and wrapped the tournament 23-under. This saw him finish second, two shots behind winner Sepp Straka. The Austrian golfer claimed his third PGA Tour claimed victory.

At the end of last season, Thomas finished T2 at the Zozo Championship, one stroke behind winner Nico Echavarria. A month later at the Hero World Challenge, Thomas finished third as Scottie Scheffler ran away with the title.

Speaking regarding his performance, the 31-year-old claimed that this week was “far” from his best. Despite failing to win, he was proud of his performance throughout the tournament.

I had a chance. I was far from my best stuff this week. I feel like I managed everything really well and got it around well, only two bogeys all week.

A few weeks ago, Thomas had dropped a bold claim regarding this year. The American golfer expressed confidence in having a year like Scottie Scheffler did in 2024. While Thomas may not get around nine victories like Scheffler did, he might break his winless run this year given the performances he has had in the last few starts.

Straka entered the final round with a four-stroke lead. Throughout the ending stages, he looked calm and composed.

He though made two bogeys in the final three holes and finished the final round with a score of 70. His scores of 65, 64 and 64 in the first three rounds though were enough for him to claim the title.

Nerves, just complete nerves. Stomach in a knot, the whole nine. So, yeah, just really excited about the way I handled the pressure today.

Following his victory, Straka also claimed $1,584,000 from the $8.8 million purse. Meanwhile, Justin Thomas collected a cheque of $959,200 as he finished as the runner-up.
