Connor McDavid etched his name in Canadian hockey folklore on Thursday night with probably the biggest goal of his career. The Edmonton Oilers captain popped up in overtime and scored the game-winning goal for Canada to clinch the 4 Nations Face-Off championship game against the USA.
The 4 Nations Face-Off, the first best-on-best international tournament, saw rivals Canada and the USA battling out again for another title. This meeting between the two countries came just a few days after the USA handed them a 3-1 defeat in Montreal.
In this highly anticipated matchup, Team Canada opened the scoring through Nathan MacKinnon. The hosts came back and took a 2-1 lead through goals from Brady Tkachuk and Jake Sanderson. Canada leveled the match with a goal from Sam Bennett in the 2nd period.
With no goals in the third period, the game went into overtime. In this extra period, both sides came close and had some good chances to end the game earlier. In the end the biggest moment came to Connor McDavid.
After winning a faceoff, he attempted a shot which went just wide. However, Canada was able to get the possession back. Mitch Marner would play him in and with no one around it, the forward smashed a shot past Connor Hellebuyck to win the game for Canada.
THERE IT IS! THE GAME WINNER! THE TOURNAMENT WINNER! 😱😱😱

For his efforts in this game, McDavid was named the game MVP. Meanwhile, Nathan MacKinnon was named as the tournament MVP for his performances. Now, the attention will turn to the regular season of the NHL as teams will begin their pursuit for a Stanley Cup playoffs push.
