Veteran pitcher Justin Verlander agrees to a 1-year $15 million contract with the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday. The deal is pending a physical but various industry sources have already confirmed the move.
The 3x Cy Young Award winner will be entering his 20th MLB season after playing for the Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros, and the New York Mets. He penned a 2-year $86.7 million deal with the Mets before shifting to Houston for the 2023-24 season.
With Justin Verlander, the Giants are getting a veteran who has not only won awards in his 19 career years in MLB but also a player with a playoff pedigree. He’ll not only be a good support for the team but also act as a mentor for the young players.
The SF Giants will now have Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, and Verlander in rotation to start off the 2025 season. They were also in the mix for Corbin Burnes but the pitcher signed a 6-year $210 million contract with the divisional rivals the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Unfortunately, Verlander’s 2024 season has been a down go for the 41-year-old who appeared in only 17 starts. He has been struggling on the mound for a while, but last year was especially hard as he was recovering from right shoulder inflammation and neck discomfort.
With the Astros, he recorded a 5.48 ERA in over 90 ⅓ innings for the team. He has recorded a 3.30 ERA overall in his career with 262 wins, and 3,416 strikeouts. He is also the 10th in MLB’s all-time strikeout list.

Justin Verlander’s move to the San Francisco Giants came as a shock to many. He’ll be starting off the season with catcher Patrick Bailey behind the plate for the 2025 run.
Many believed Verlander would retire after his 19-season mark and a slow year, but he proved many wrong. There’s been mixed reaction among fans where some noted about his retirement, and others celebrated and congratulated the veteran pitcher.
One X user said, “Hell of a signing for the Giants,” while another penned “No way Giants fans like this move!!!”. Some congratulated the player saying, “The great park for him.” Check more fan reactions below:

Wow, I didn't expect that one. He's not the Verlander that he once was, but I'm sure he can still get the job done. As long as he can stay healthy

Glad he is still playing.

With Verlander out of the free agency, notable players like Pete Alonso, Anthony Santander, Alex Bregman, Ha-Seong Kim, and Jurickson Profar are remaining. The race to get Roki Sasaki from the international market is also worth noting.
