Manchester City and Arsenal ended up sharing the spoils as the early meeting between the title contenders did not disappoint. Arsenal were close to taking home all three points until a late goal from Manchester City salvaged a point for the hosts. Despite the exciting finish and emphatic celebrations, fans also took notice of a surprising statistic concerning two Arsenal stars – Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber.
A quick look at the numbers reveals that Manchester City enjoyed the larger share of possession (77%). They also took more shots, created more chances and forced more saves out of the opposition keeper.
As the game came to a close, many were surprised to learn that neither Kai Havertz or Jurrien Timber completed a single pass against City. This unique ‘achievement’ is a first since 2003/2004 and took many by surprise. Havertz attempted a total of six passes while Timber attempted a total of seven.
Arteta’s side did well to take the lead after Erling Haaland opened the scoring in the 9th minute. Despite not completing any passes, Havertz and Timber put in a shift defensively, which ultimately helped the visitors claim a point.
Fans react to Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber failing to complete a pass against City
Several fans found it hard to believe that not one, but two players failed to complete a pass till the 90th minute against Manchester City. A few blamed Mikel Arteta and his extremely defensive tactics for the same while others laughed at the ‘anti-football’ on display. However, Arsenal fans did not remain silent, as they argued that the two contributed a lot to the result.
A supporter mocked the iconic Havertz chant, which brags about his £60 million price tag. Even though a few claimed that they did their job perfectly, not making a single pass goes against the basic principles upon which the game is played. Havertz played the entire game while Timber was subbed off for Myles Lewis-Skelly with an apparent injury.
As for the game itself, Leandro Trossard‘s red card became a talking point, when the Belgian was sent off after picking up a second yellow. Arteta protested the decision and refrained from making any comments on the same. However, he did go on to state that he expects to see at least 100 games which feature 10vs11 or 10vs10.
