Former New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson is close to reaching the 10,000-run milestone in Test cricket, but his future with the Blackcaps is in the air. The 35-year-old had a selfless reaction upon being asked about the feat, noting that he is not focused on records and numbers.

Kane Williamson is a member of the ‘Fab Four’, a group that also includes Virat Kohli, Steve Smith and Joe Root. While Root and Smith have already crossed the 10,000-run milestone in Test cricket, Kohli, already retired, and Williamson is yet to do so. The New Zealander has 9,461 Test runs to his name, and only needs 539 more to make it to the mark and become the first player from New Zealand to do so.

However, it is uncertain whether the Kiwi batter will be able to achieve the feat, given his national team future remains in doubt. Williamson’s decision to sign a contract with New Zealand Cricket makes him available only for selective series.

He most recently featured in the Kiwis’ three-match Test series against the West Indies at home, which was his first appearance in Test cricket after almost a year. Earlier this year, he chose to play in the Hundred over international cricket.

The 35-year-old’s decision to balance time with his family and his international cricketing commitments with the Black Caps, has resulted in rumors emerging that the batter might be contemplating retirement from the longest format. With him potentially falling short of the 10,000-run achievement, the former New Zealand skipper was questioned about it at the end of the series against the West Indies.

Williamson suggested that his focus is only driven by his unwavering commitment towards contributing to the team’s success and not personal records. Furthermore, he exclaimed that while modern-day cricket has been overwhelmed with stats, whatever runs he scores are for his team. He reiterated his intent to try to win matches for New Zealand, rather than speaking about the number of opportunities he might get with the team.

For me it’s about contribution [to the team]. I’ve never really played for, you know… just never used this team for my own personal gain.

On his future with the team, Williamson shared that he would make a decision on it on a ‘series-by-series’ basis. It remains to be seen whether the veteran batter is available for New Zealand’s next assignments, including the limited-overs tour to India in January.

No Virat Kohli vs. Kane Williamson: Kiwi legend to skip India ODIs for SA20

Kane Williamson’s future with the national team remains uncertain, with the player having opted out of New Zealand’s upcoming limited-overs tour to India. It therefore means that Williamson will not face rival and Indian cricketing icon Virat Kohli in the forthcoming year.

Williamson and New Zealand Cricket (NZC) have worked together to determine which bilateral series and multi-nation tournaments the former Kiwi skipper will feature in. The 35-year-old was not a part of the ODI squad that faced the West Indies in the recently-concluded all-format series, but only featured in the three Test matches, where he scored 185 runs, at an average of 46.25.

A veteran in the 50-over format, Williamson boasts 7,257 runs in 175 ODIs, at a commendable average of 48.38, including 47 fifties and 15 hundreds. He, however, will not feature in New Zealand’s upcoming three-match ODI series against India, starting January 11. The veteran icon has already signed a deal with Durban Super Giants in the SA20, with the 2025-26 season set to coincide with the series.

Following his association with DSG, Williamson is expected to travel to India to be a part of the IPL. The batter was not a part of the 2026 IPL auction, after being roped in as the new strategic advisor of Lucknow Super Giants.
