Karolina Pliskova reveals her thoughts on facing Spaniard Garbine Muguruza for the 11th time on tour
Karolina Pliskova will be up against Garbine Muguruza in the group stage of the 2021 WTA Finals in Mexico. Pliskova is ranked No.4 in the world while Muguruza is the World No.5. Wimbledon finalist Karolina Pliskova has had a good season so far. After a poor few opening months, she made it to the final at Rome and also made it to the final at Wimbledon before losing to Ash Barty. She then reached the final of the Canadian Open and followed it up with a semifinal at Cincinnati.
She also made it to the quarterfinal of the US Open before a Round of 32 exit at Indian Wells. Former French Open and Wimbledon champion, Garbine Muguruza has had a mixed season so far. After bowing out of the third round at Wimbledon, she reached the Round of 16 at Flushing Meadows but had a poor North American swing overall.
She then won the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic and followed it up with a quarterfinal outing at Moscow where she lost to Anett Kontaveit. The pair are set to lock horns against each other in the group stage of WTA Finals 2021.
Pliskova on facing Muguruza for the 11th time: “The last time, I was with Conchita. She’s with Conchita right now.”
The Wimbledon finalist of 2021 however believes that sharing the same coach one after the other will not have much effect on their upcoming match at the WTA Finals although it’s going to be a difficult one as the pair will be facing each other for the 11th time on the WTA tour.
Pliskova had hired 1994 Wimbledon winner from Spain, Conchita Martinez during the 2018 US Open and she immediately went on to win the Pacific Open in Tokyo that year. Furthermore, she went on to win four WTA tournaments in 2019 and reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open and at the WTA Finals in the same year, where she bowed out to World No.1 and eventual champion Ashleigh Barty. Karolina announced her separation with Conchita in early November, 2019.
Muguruza won Wimbledon 2017 with Conchita Martinez in her corner. The two-time Grand Slam champion, reunited with fellow Spaniard and coach, Martinez in late November 2019 after Pliskova announced her separation from former Spanish tennis player.
