In the starting of the fight, you can certainly see that Cynthia has increased the volume of strikes that she is going to throw and gets some good punches thrown in but Chookagian handles them well. She is fighting from the range that she prefers. Near the end of the round, Calvillo goes in for a takedown but Chookagian handles it like a pro and increases the number of shots she throws. While round 1 was arguably a bit more close, this round went to the Blonde Fighter.

Round 3: Chookagian is throwing shots, letting out a scream everytime she throws a strike and is somehow still understanding all the secret codes that her corner is throwing at her. Calvillo knows she needs to end this fight in order to win so she goes on blazing. However, she was unable to land anything substantional. It is quite tough for her to close in the distance.

Round 2: This round emphasised more on what the last round hinted at. Instead of committing to going in and closing in the distance, it seems that Calvillo, instead of utilising her wrestling and ground game, sticks to fighting the much taller Chookagian at her range.

Blonde Fighter goes into defence mode while Cynthia charges in. The pace is a bit slower compared to previous rounds because Katlyn knows she is up on the scorecards. Calvillo goes in for a takedown but Katlyn is able to thwart the attempt and go right back to striking for a distance. In the last seconds of the fight, Calvillo manages to land some blows and unfortunately for her, they were not enough to seal the deal.

After 3 rounds, the official decision was out: Katlyn Chookagian defeats Cynthia Calvillo by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

Both fighters were ready to get it on as the winner would get a chance at the current champion “Valentina Shevchenko” so the stakes were high for both fighters.

Going into the fight, Cynthia stepped into the octagon with a record of 9-1-1 and had the advantages on paper. She had a 1.97 to 0.30 advantage in the takedown-average category, an overwhelming 46.67 to 15.79 takedown-accuracy percentage and 1.26 to 0.50 in submission average. Quite good on paper, especially when you add to that the fact that she was the heavy betting favourite by being a -264 heavy favourite.

She was the much taller fighters with a 4 inch reach advantage and traded evenly in terms of strikes per-minute. Fight Analysis:

Round 1: From the very beginning of round 1, you can se that the height advantage that Katlyn has is going to something Cynthia is going to have to work-around. Calvillo starts the fight at a fast pace, throwing combinations and even securing a take down. No signifcant damage was done though and Katlyn got right back up to her feet and instantly goes back to throwing jobs.

It seems that despite the obvious advantage in reach, Cynthia sticks with fighting at the range which is more advantageous for the Blonde Fighter. Katlyn seems to be landing shots more consistently and in volume while Cynthia lands a strong shot every now and then. The jabs of Katlyn makes Cynthia’s nose bleed but it was a very close round
