Sunrisers Hyderabad has suffered in the IPL in last few years. However, in IPL 2024, they managed to build a strong squad led by World Cup winning captain, Pat Cummins. Cummins led the team to the final of IPL 2024.

Co-owner Kavya Maran was very pleased with the performance of her team in IPL 2024 and even thanked the players for the season after they lost against Kolkata Knight Riders in the final. However, she may not be able to retain the core of the squad as there will be a mega auction ahead of IPL 2025.

After the recent meeting between the IPL franchises and the governing council, Maran said that teams should be given the right to retain 6 of their players after the auction or should have the right to bring them back in the auction by using the Right-To-Match (RTM) cards.

She felt that players sometimes aren’t pleased with the retention amount. So, if they are bought using the RTM card, they won’t have anything to complain.

We can use it as four retentions and two RTMS, or all six retentions, or all six RTMS and so on. The choice on whether a retention or RTM is used should be with the franchise based on discussions with the player.

The IPL governing council is yet to decide on the rules and regulations of the upcoming IPL auction. So, it remains to be seen if they do accept what Maran has suggested.

Here’s all about the meeting between franchises and the BCCI

A meeting was held between the franchises and the governing council to decide on the rules and regulations of the upcoming auction. As per reports, the franchises were not having the same idea of the number of retentions that should be allowed. Some wanted 4, others wanted 8 even 10. Moreover, there were no fixed decisions made on the number of RTM cards as well.

Franchises also wanted the permission to negotiate with the players after they were bought at a certain price in the auction. There is no option of increment for the players after they were bought. The franchises wanted that permission so that the players could not be poached by other franchises.

Now, it remains to be seen what the BCCI and the IPL governing council decide. As per reports, they will announce the rules and regulations by the end of August.
