The Toronto Maple Leafs are ushering in a new era. Following their exit from the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs, the team made a huge move and relieved President Brendan Shanahan of his duties. On Friday, the Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) CEO, Keith Pelley, sent a powerful message to the team and its fans.

This season, the Maple Leafs finished on top of the Atlantic Division. Under the leadership of new head coach Craig Berube, the Toronto-based side finished the regular season with 108 points while having a 52-26-4 record.

At that time, it seemed this would finally be the year of the Maple Leafs. In the first round, they almost swept their arch-rivals, Ottawa Senators. After eliminating them, the team took on the Florida Panthers.

The Maple Leafs started off strong and took a 2-0 series lead. However, the Panthers found a way back in the series through a win in Game 3 and won two more in the bounce to put their opponents on the brink. A 2-0 victory in Game 6 for the Maple Leafs forced Game 7.

This is where they exploded once again. The Panthers crushed them 6-1 and handed them their 8th successive Game 7 loss. After the loss, the team decided to move in a new direction and let go of Shanahan as the team President.

On Friday, MLSE CEO Keith Pelley addressed the media regarding the new changes. During this, the former DP World Tour leader expressed that “Good simply is not good enough.”

We have a responsibility to our fans, and that responsibility is winning Championships. And we will do everything we possibly can and will not stop until we reach that goal.

Keith Pelley admits Maple Leafs will not replace Brendan Shanahan

The Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment made a huge move on Thursday by firing Brendan Shanahan. A day later, CEO Keith Pelley admitted that the team will not be replacing him and finding a new President for the time being.

Shanahan, the NHL Hall of Famer, was announced as the team President in 2014. In his 11-year stay, the team underwent several transformations which included the ‘Core 4’ era. In his tenure, the Maple Leafs made it to the playoffs 9 out of 11 times.

Following his exit, some were wondering about who could be the next President of the team. As per Kelley, there won’t be anyone as he has expressed trust in GM Brad Treliving and head coach Craig Berube.

I have my utmost confidence in Brad and my utmost confidence in Craig. I’m not looking to replace Brendan. I’m looking to work closer with Brad and work closer with Craig.

During the 9 straight playoffs appearance under Shanahan, the team managed to make it past the first round only twice (in 2023 and 2025). Both times, they ended up getting eliminated by the Panthers in the second-round.

The Maple Leafs have not made it to the Conference Finals since 2002. Their last Stanley Cup triumph came all the way back in 1967. They are on the longest drought among the ‘Original Six’ teams.

Keith Pelley comments on Mitch Marner’s future with Maple Leafs

One big talking point in the past few weeks has been the future of Mitch Marner. The Canadian forward is in the final year of his contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs and will become an Unrestricted Free Agent (UFA) if he does not sign an extension. MLSE CEO Keith Pelley commented on this matter on Friday.

Marner is part of the ‘Core 4’ of the team along with Auston Matthews, William Nylander, and John Tavares. Tying him down to a huge contract is one of the most important tasks at hand for Pelley and his team.

In the press conference, the 61-year-old simply expressed that they will see what happens in the upcoming weeks.

He’s one of the most prolific scorers we’ve ever had. I haven’t had the privilege of watching his magic over the last number of years, only the last year. We’ll see what happens with Mitch Marner in the weeks ahead.

Recently, reports emerged that the Maple Leafs offered the largest contract in team history to Marner before the start of the playoffs. The 28-year-old would decline that offer.

He has spent his entire career with the Maple Leafs. During his 9-year stay with his hometown team, Marner has played 657 games and has 221 goals and 520 assists (741 points).
