Injuries can derail any athlete’s career, but Joel Embiid’s journey has been uniquely challenging. The Philadelphia 76ers star has battled multiple setbacks that not only limited his time on the court but also chipped away at his confidence. Many believe that if Embiid had stayed healthy, he could have firmly cemented himself as one of the league’s all-time greats.

At one point, he was being called the best center to play the game, and winning the NBA MVP award in 2023 added to his case. But everything went downhill after the knee injury he suffered early in 2024, completely changing the outcome of his future as a basketball player. Now, Embiid is just a mere shadow of himself.

Just over a week ago, Embiid gave an explosive interview regarding his career, the 76ers, and his injuries with to ESPN. To add to this, NBA analyst Keith Pompey made a heartbreaking case regarding Embiid. Pompey believes that the ‘end is near’ for Embiid after coming across his aforementioned interview.

I think Joel may know that the end is near. And this is just me saying that. And it’s kind of explaining to people what he’s going through. Because rarely do you have a guy tell you how much pain and how much they’re going through.

Keith Pompey said on SiriusXM NBA Radio

Embiid has struggled with numerous ailments that have continuously hindered his recovery. At various points in time, he has experienced foot and knee issues, facial fractures, and other sprains. In terms of his general skill, it is this aspect that has been criticized the most. The ability of being able to stay fit has always been a concern for Embiid and the Sixers.

With Pompey’s remarks ringing alarm bells, it is still early to state that Embiid may call it quits on his career. But the worrying interview does raise some questions. In Embiid’s opinion, this offseason is among the most significant and pivotal in his NBA career.

Chris Broussard also rules out Joel Embiid having a great upcoming season

If fans and analysts had one choice to give a basketball player an injury-free season in recent times, it would surely be the Sixers’ star Joel Embiid. Because, Embiid has had one of the worst phases of his career due to injuries hampering his body. He was in his prime, winning the NBA MVP award, dropping masterclass performances back to back, just for injuries to take a toll on his career in the last two years.

Given that, NBA analyst Chris Broussard also believes the same. He does not believe that Embiid will have the same impact as before because of the injuries he has suffered.

To me, Joel Embiid is in the Kawhi Leonard class where I don’t expect anything. I hate to even say this: I feel like he’s gonna play 30 something games, be great in those 30 something games. It’s not solely his fault, it’s the injuries.

Chris Broussard said via First Things First

Considering that Embiid and Kawhi Leonard have both missed a lot of NBA games in the past two years, Broussard’s claims certainly make sense. Embiid only played in 19 games the previous season, which worried the 76ers’ management. The 76ers’ star is still working on his recuperation and intends to play in more games this season.

Joel Embiid’s teammate Tyrese Maxey is locked in ahead of the new season

This past 2024-25 NBA season, the Philadelphia 76ers witnessed one of their worst campaigns in the NBA. But it was mostly because of injuries to their star players, such as Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Paul George, throughout different intervals of the season, leading to poor performances throughout the year.

Now, the only solution the three stars have is to make a fitting comeback and silence all their haters and doubters in the upcoming 2025-26 season. Tyrese Maxey, in particular, is more motivated than ever to make a point for the new season.

This was Maxey’s way of saying that he and his side are down but not out of the game. If the Sixers manage to have all three of their stars on the roster fit and healthy, they will surely thrive in the Eastern Conference this year.
