All eyes of the NHL world were fixated on the USA-Canada game on Saturday. The anticipated game lived up to its hype as Team USA came out as 3-1 winners. The start of the game saw brothers Matthew and Brady Tkachuk get into a fight with their opponents after the US National anthem got booed. Following the game, their dad Keith Tkachuk dropped a hilarious reaction towards his sons’ fights.

In the past few days, the tensions between the United States and Canada have risen to a new level. Following Donald Trump‘s bold claim of making Canada the “51st state” of the US and implementation of new tariffs, there has been some heavy booing from Canadian fans at the US National Anthem.

On the opening day, Team USA captain Auston Mathews was also heavily booed by the crowd. While he was booed for his ties with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the crowd reaction was something that the Americans did not like.

Just two seconds into the game, Matthew Tkachuk would drop his gloves against Canada’s Brandon Hagel. After throwing haymakers at each other, Hagel would bring him down. As the two players entered the penalty box, there was some chirping between Brady Tkachuk and Sam Bennett.

One second later into the game, the two of them started going at each other. This bout was won by the younger Tkachuk as he slammed down his opponent. Following this match, former NHL star and the father of the Tkachuk brothers, Keith Tkachuk, labeled them as “lunatics”.

Those two are lunatics. I don’t know what to tell you. They’re great kids off the ice, but, on the ice, you know, they’re funny. I love the personality. I think it’s great.

29 years ago at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey, Keith Tkachuk did a similar thing during the match between USA and Canada. Inside 20 seconds of the game, he dropped his gloves against Claude Lemieux.

Matthew Tkachuk revealed they wanted to send message to Canada through early fights

While the match against USA and Canada was expected to get intense due to the rivalry between the two countries, very few would have thought of three early fights in the game. Following the win, Matthew Tkachuk revealed that they wanted to send a “message” to Canada.

When it came to international success, Canada have been the upper hand over the United States since 2010. They won the 2010 and 2014 Winter Games, the 2015 IIHF World Championship and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

Apart from that, they have also produced some of the all-time greats of the game. Thus Matthew Tkachuk wanted to send a message to their rivals.

The message we wanted to send is, ‘It’s our time right now.” We’re in a hostile environment. We wanted to show that we’re not backing down. They’ve had so much success, and so many players over there are some of the best players in the world.

The brothers also revealed having a group chat with J.T. Miller earlier in the day. During this, they planned on fighting with their opponents. After the scrum of the Tkachuk brothers, Miller would get involved into a fistfight with Colton Parayko at the 9-second mark.

Team USA will now take on Sweden on Monday knowing that they are already through to the final. This could see the elder Tkachuk being rested as he missed huge portion of the third period due to a lower-body injury.
