The 2024 WNBA season has reached its climax and fans would be excited that the Las Vegas Aces and New York Liberty are set to face off in the next round of the 2024 WNBA playoffs after both teams secured series victories on Tuesday. The Aces completed a first-round sweep of the Seattle Storm with an 83-76 win, while the Liberty handled the Atlanta Dream, overcoming some early resistance in Game 2.

After their respective round one wins, Aces’ head coach Becky Hammon and player Kelsey Plum commented about the rematch against the New York Liberty. Both teams faced off last year during the Finals with the Aces emerging victorious.

New York is a lot better than they were last year, plain and simple… if you go down the line like pound for pound, individually, all of them are better.

Head Coach Becky Hammon chimed in as well.

They’ve been the best team all year.

During the regular season, New York finished as the number one overall seed and proved their dominance in the first round. Although they had to work extra hard as the Atlanta Dream briefly tested them in Game 2, they ultimately advanced with ease thanks to a monstrous performance from Sabrina Ionescu. Meanwhile, while the Aces swept their first-round opponent, their regular season wasn’t as commanding as New York’s.

Fans of the Liberty would be more excited about the match-up as their team holds a 3-0 record against the Aces during the concluded regular season. However, the Aces have shown their strength, notably as they held the Seattle Storm to just two points in the final quarter of Game 1 and rallied for a win in Game 2 and will need to be at their best to compete against New York’s well-rounded roster.

Kelsey Plum throws in her support for teammate A’ja Wilson

The WNBA regular season came to an end, and before the season awards rolled in, Kelsey Plum asserted that it would be unthinkable for A’ja Wilson not to be a unanimous choice for the WNBA MVP this season. She made this claim when she spoke to SB Nation’s Noa Dalzell, Plum expressed her strong support for her Las Vegas Aces teammate, emphasizing Wilson’s dominance as she pursues her third MVP award.

If she’s not the unanimous MVP, I have conspiracy theories. I mean, I really will [have conspiracy theories], you know? I don’t even know who else you put in the conversation, to be honest.

Kelsey Plum said to Noa Dalzell

Interestingly, Plum was adamant that while other players have had great seasons, none of them are in the same bracket as Wilson. Wilson has been exceptional, as she led the WNBA in points (26.9) and blocks (2.6) per game. Furthermore, she also set a new single-season scoring record for the Las Vegas franchise.

Plum would be excited that her wish came to pass as she was named the league’s unanimous MVP. And while standout players like Caitlin Clark, Sabrina Ionescu, and Alyssa Thomas have had impressive seasons, Wilson deserved it the most.
