Kendrick Perkins expresses concern for New York Knicks after timid start

The New York Knicks have not had the kind of start to their season that they would have expected. After finishing near the top of the Eastern Conference last season, the Knicks have started slow, going 4-5 in their first nine games. As the team continues to integrate their big offseason additions, ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins expressed his concern for the team’s current state of affairs.

Kendrick Perkins joined Shannon Sharpe on ESPN’s First Take to discuss the Knicks’ early season woes. Perkins revealed that his level of concern with the New York Knicks is ‘through the roof.’

My blood pressure is high when I watch the New York Knicks. Are they dangerous in figuring things out? Yes, they do look great offensively… But this is a Tom Thibodeau-led team. His teams are known for what? His teams are known for being pests defensively and being one of the best defensive teams in the league. These Knicks that I’m watching? That’s not it! And it’s concerning.

Kendrick Perkins said on the show

In the past, the Knicks have prided themselves on their grit and defensive versatility. So far into the season, the team has a defensive rating of 115.1, which is good for the bottom half of the best defenses in the league. Although their offense has been better, the defensive woes of the team have been their undoing so far.

Kendrick Perkins had some praise for the newly acquired Karl Anthony Towns and his offensive output. However, the issue with the current roster lacking defensive versatility still remains for the New York Knicks.

New York Knicks take home first NBA Cup game in Joel Embiid’s return

The second edition of the Emirates NBA Cup tournament kicked off on Tuesday night with much fanfare. The New York Knicks took on the struggling Philadelphia 76ers in their first NBA Cup game of the season.

While the highlight of the game was the return of Joel Embiid, the Knicks responded well to Kendrick Perkins’ rant with a win. The game saw Karl Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby lead the way in scoring for the Knicks with 21 and 24 points, respectively.

The Knicks responded to Kendrick Perkins’ criticism of their defense by holding the Sixers to just 99 points in their 111-99 victory. The latest win now takes the Knicks win total to 5-5, putting them at the .500 mark for the season.
