Kendrick Perkins wants Pat Riley to let Jimmy Butler go amid trade buzz

Kendrick Perkins suggests that Pat Riley and the Miami Heat should move on from Jimmy Butler

The NBA trade rumor mill is ablaze, with much of the chatter centered around Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler. He is one of the most fierce competitors and mentally tough players in the league. Butler is reportedly at the center of speculation about a potential trade before the February 6 deadline. While the Heat remains reluctant to pull the trigger, ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins thinks they should make a trade.

On Wednesday’s NBA Countdown, ESPN analyst and former NBA veteran Kendrick Perkins shared his thoughts on the situation. He urged Heat President Pat Riley to respect Jimmy Butler’s wishes should he ask to be traded. Perkins didn’t mince words, taking aim at the legendary Riley in a pointed response to the Heat’s reluctance to move on from Butler.

I understand Pat Riley is old and stuck in his ways at 79 years of age and pushing 80. And I get it, a legend in the game of basketball but Jimmy Butler has done more than enough for this franchise. He should be able to get granted his wishes, especially right now.

That wasn’t all from Perkins though. He went on to clarify which team he believes is the ideal landing spot for Butler, who has already made clear his preferred destinations on the West Coast. The Phoenix Suns led by Kevin Durant remains a good destination for Butler according to Perkins.

Perkins elaborated that Jimmy Butler’s relentless mentality would perfectly complement Kevin Durant’s style of play. It adds an edge to a Phoenix Suns team already vying for championship contention as Butler performs better during playoffs. Only time will tell if the trade happens or not.

Pat Riley makes stance on Jimmy Butler clear

While the entire NBA is vying to get the edge on Jimmy Butler’s preferred trade destinations, the Miami Heat are unwilling to part ways. Miami Heat President Pat Riley took the rare step of addressing the speculation directly. On Thursday, Riley released a statement shutting down the possibility of trading Butler.

We usually don’t comment on rumors, but all this speculation has become a distraction to the team and is not fair to the players and coaches. Therefore, we will make it clear – We are not trading Jimmy Butler.

Pat Riley said in a statement issued by the team

For Miami, the situation is as tricky as it gets. Butler has not formally requested a trade, but reports suggest he would consider destinations like the Phoenix Suns, Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets, and the Dallas Mavericks. This is only on the table if the Heat remains open to moving him.

However, with Butler’s contract set to expire soon and his player option for next season valued at $52 million, the Heat risk losing him for nothing if they don’t act before the deadline. For the team’s part, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra also has made it clear that the team has no intentions of moving on from their star player.
