The Buffalo Bills started strong with a four-game winning streak. But then, their offense, led by Josh Allen, Keon Coleman, and others, struggled to find its rhythm.

That saw the team lose two straight games to teams they should have been comfortably defeating. That has brought up questions about the state of the offense and whether they are capable of handling games against top-tier competition.

The Bills baffled the Baltimore Ravens on opening night with a late-game charge. However, the latter’s defense, along with their next 4 opponents, was mid or bad at its best.

The two losses, however, came against good defenses. They did win their Week 8 clash against the Carolina Panthers, but it was largely due to the latter’s mistakes.

That has brought up questions about whether the offense is struggling in any particular area. Former wide receiver Steve Smith believes that at least their leading pass catcher, Keon Coleman, is not helping matters.

While speaking on his 89 – Steve Smith Sr. podcast, the former Ravens wideout detailed how Josh Allen gets heat for not targeting Coleman when open. However, he explained that it is not the QB’s fault.

He just doesn’t get open fast enough… He doesn’t have the ability to be a true No. 1, and he’s not. He ain’t the guy. Can’t get separation. Can’t get off the jam. Doesn’t have it. You can’t teach a dog how to bark. You either got it or you don’t.

Smith explained that Allen does not target Keon Coleman, as the latter does not get open on time. He believes the Louisiana native has not been consistent since Week 1.

Keon Coleman evades responding to Steve Smith’s criticism

This is the first time Keon Coleman has received this level of criticism since he came into the league. When Andy Young caught up to the wideout during practice, he pressed the Florida State alum about Steve Smith’s comments.

I don’t even really know what he said. That’s why I said ‘No Comment’.

Keon Coleman replied

The receiver then went on to add that he still feels pretty good about his progress and what he is doing to help the Buffalo Bills find their offensive identity.

At the same time, he stayed away from answering questions about schemes and why he is not targeted more than he is. It seems Smith’s comments got to the 22-year-old, as he was not his usual jovial self.

Keon Coleman has to improve if Bills want to fight for the Super Bowl

The Buffalo Bills have an identity crisis on offense, and ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky pointed out that quarterback Josh Allen looks ‘frustrated’ and confused. The analyst believes the coaches have to figure out how to get the wide receivers open.

Orlovsky detailed that Allen’s struggles were with the lack of a deep ball. Long throws are his favorite way of stretching the defense. Since he has not been able to do so, opposing defenses are collapsing their short game.

It seems most of the problems are with what Steve Smith explained. Keon Coleman’s inability to get open at the right time is affecting his quarterback and the offense as a whole.

If he does not get his act together, the Bills’ chances of fighting for a Super Bowl are going to be zero. Moreover, the 6′ 3″ star is also essentially fighting to stay as a starter.
