The Buffalo Bills’ wideout Keon Coleman was meted out a second serving of disciplinary action by the head coach Sean McDermott amid the Week 5 game against the New England Patriots. The fact that this happened more than once has frustrated everyone involved and Coleman understands that.

In the Patriots game, McDermott had benched Coleman in the first series. Though it wasn’t quite noticeable due to the Bills’ habit of constant roster and skill position rotation, it was revealed by Sean McDermott that he did it for disciplinary reasons. He had previously been benched in the Week 3 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The wideout, who’s in his second season, has not grown into the impact-making wideout he was projected to be. Speaking to the media on Thursday, when the Bills returned to practice ahead of their Monday night game against the Atlanta Falcons, he admitted that he didn’t consider the benching as a setback but noted that it’s a growing pain.

He addressed that the incident might have led some to speculate that he didn’t care about the consequences or the team and its members. He shut down any such speculation and mentioned that there’s nothing like that. He, however, didn’t reveal the reasons why McDermott benched him. Coleman said:

We keep that in the house, but like he said, the reasons, just got to be more accountable.

It’s believed he arrived late to a team meeting sometime prior to last week’s loss to the Patriots. After being benched for the first series, he played 62% of the Bills’ offensive snaps and caught four passes for 23 yards, including a touchdown. He also lost a costly fumble in the first quarter, costing the Bills three points. They eventually lost the game by three points.

Josh Allen was not happy with Keon Coleman

Josh Allen, the defending MVP and the Buffalo Bills’ quarterback-captain, was not happy with Keon Coleman’s antics. Allen mentioned that he thought that Coleman understood and he had some takeaway from the whole incident.

Allen, though a bit displeased about being let down, praised the wideout for his hard work and efforts. He added that they are still working on the relationships and developing the rapport between the individual players and the team. He also mentioned that the skills in the game and coming through in big plays will be something the team will expect from Coleman in the upcoming games:

I think he understands. I think he knows at the end of the day, this locker room, this team, you don’t ever want to let your teammates down. He’s a guy that continues to work extremely hard. For him, late in that game, to score a touchdown, made a couple big plays for us, the third-down jump ball, we’re going to need more of that from him. It’s not going to deter (me from) going his way at all.

Meanwhile, Sean McDermott was also asked ahead of the practice session about Coleman’s developments in the meantime. However, McDermott wasn’t able to provide a solid answer, noting that he will be able to find a conclusive answer only after the practice.

The Bills are playing the Falcons on Monday night, looking to bounce back from their defeat against the New England Patriots. The Bills were 4-0 before the game, in blazing hot form since they rallied in the fourth quarter against the Baltimore Ravens. With a soft schedule, the Bills will need to keep the same momentum so they will head into the playoffs with the same heat and passion.
