Kevin Cordon vs Viktor Axelsen
Guatemala’s Kevin Cordon and Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen are set to face each other in the Men’s Singles Badminton semi-final in the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday, August 1. The match will take place at the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza BDM Court 1. Even as Axelsen is placed second in the BWF World Rankings, Cordon is the 59th ranked shuttler.
Kevin Cordon vs Viktor Axelsen: Preview
Not even the optimists would have expected Cordon to make the semi-final. However, the 34-year-old has managed wins in four matches in a row, defying all the odds. After defeating Mexico’s Lino Munoz and Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long in straight sets, he faced a stern challenge in the Round of 16 match.
He started the game against the Netherlands’ Mark Caljouw with a 21-17 win in the first, but then slumped 3-21 in the second. However, he won the third set 21-19 to come out trumps. In the quarter-final, he didn’t have many troubles as he defeated South Korea’s Heo Kwang-hee by 21-13, 21-18.
Axelsen, on the other hand, has pretty much been flawless in the Tokyo Olympics. The 2016 Olympics bronze medallist is yet to drop a set in the mega event thus far. Moreover, he is yet to face a tough test. The former world champion started with a 21-12, 21-11 victory over Austria’s Luka Wraber.
Thereafter he got past Finland’s Kalle Koljonen by a margin of 21-9, 21-13 followed by his 21-16, 21-14 win over Taiwan’s Wang Tzu-wei. In the quarter-final, Axelsen looked in dominating touch as well. He went on to beat China’s Shi Yuqi by 21-13, 21-13 to set up a clash with Guatemala’s Cordon.
