Belgium took on Ukraine on the final matchday in Group E as fans were treated to a goalless draw at MHPArena in Stuttgart. Kevin De Bruyne and his men were clear favorites to go through but found themselves needing a draw or win to book a spot in the knockouts. Despite incessant efforts from the Red Devils, their inability to find the net managed to frustrate fans.
Following the full-time whistle, the stadium was drowned in boos from Belgium supporters. Despite the positive result, Kevin De Bruyne and his men were treated to loud boos and cheers complaining about their unconvincing display. This in turn enraged De Bruyne who was making an effort to thank Belgium fans for their support. Halfway into the same, the player turned back and brutally ordered the rest of his teammates to follow suit.
Clips recorded from the stands show De Bruyne ordering his teammates to turn back and make their way to the tunnel. Fans appeared to agree with the captain’s decision, stating that he is in no way obliged to allow him and his teammates to be disrespected.
The Man City midfielder picked up the Player Of The Match award for a second consecutive game ahead of his side’s qualification to the Round of 16.
Romelu Lukaku off-target as Belgium book spot in Round of 16
Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku was up to his usual ‘tricks’ as his side played out a goalless draw against Ukraine. The Red Devils were clearly the better side, creating multiple chances from the very start. As has been the case at the Euros, Lukaku struggled to find the net, missing a number of golden opportunities to fire his side in front.
Of all his chaces, the one that turned heads the most came in the 6th minute of the game. A perfectly weighted through ball from De Bruyne put Lukaku in the clear on a 1v1 with the opposition keeper. Shockingly, the striker failed to make proper contact with the ball, handing it straight to Anatoliy Trubin.
Ukrainian forwards Artem Dovbyk and Roman Yaremchuk were kept silent thanks to a monumental display from Belgium’s backline and Wout Faes in particular. Following the result, Belgium are now in the knockouts and will face France on the 1st of July at Dusseldorf Arena. As for Ukraine, their group stage elimination is a first in Euros history, as they became the first side to be eliminated in the group stages despite having four points.
