Belgium were up against Ukraine on the final matchday in Group E. All four teams in the group were evenly matched at 3 points going into the last game. Kevin De Bruyne and his men were held to a goalless draw against Ukraine but managed to secure qualification by virtue of their superior goal difference. Opponents Ukraine crashed out of the group stage despite having 4 points, thereby becoming the first team in the history of the Euros to do so.

Despite all the permutations and combinations prior to the final whistle, what caught the attention of fans the most was a laser pointed at the Belgium captain’s face. This occurred not once, but twice over the course of 90 minutes as fans expressed their outrage on social media.

Whoever committed the same would have been disappointed to learn that the Belgian skipper picked up the Player Of The Match award. His key passes and perfectly weighted through balls set up multiple chances for the Red Devils, even though Romelu Lukaku and the rest of the forwards failed to find the net.

Fans enraged as laser gets pointed at Kevin De Bruyne’s face

Kevin De Bruyne has been instrumental for Belgium as they made it past the group stages at the 2024 Euros. The Manchester City midfielder picked up two POTM Awards in his last two outings for Belgium. The regrettable incident occurred on two separate occasions, as the 32-year-old made his way to take a corner kick. A fan commented that such an incident is simply unacceptable in the highest level of European football.

Another added that UEFA should take more precautions to protect their players, who are already overworked and made to play multiple games in a tight schedule. Some called for the perpetrators to be banned from ever attending football matches in the future. Some however, saw the funny side of things, as they claimed that De Bruyne already has inbuilt lasers inside his eyes.

A fan took a dig at Romelu Lukaku, who was largely ‘wasteful’ with his chances and also in the last two games for Belgium. He exclaimed that fans would’ve been much more content had the laser been pointed at the striker. Some dismissed the incident as something that happens almost everywhere and that such a big deal shouldn’t be made out of it. De Bruyne has comfortably been the Red Devils’ best player at the tournament by a mile.
