Dallas Mavericks should look at trading for Kevin Durant

The entire basketball world was fixated onto their television screens watching Luka Doncic return to the Dallas Mavericks. The anticipation had been building as fans termed it a revenge game for the Slovenian after how they tried to show that they were better off without him.

The Mavericks front office has taken a lot of heat since then. Death threats forced them to beef up security. Then fans chanting and displaying ‘Fire Nico’ signs were escorted out of the American Airlines Center.

This showed that that even though the Mavericks brought in Anthony Davis, one of the best big men in the game, fans felt it was not a like for like trade. That frustration carried on into yesterday’s game after Luka Doncic scored 45 points to defeat his old team.

Fans saw first-hand what an Anthony Davis led team could do against a team helmed by their former franchise cornerstone. It was not pretty, and they shouted out ‘Fire Nico’ numerous times. Now Mavericks are in a precarious position. Their revenues are down, fan interest is low, and the overall mood is gloomy. But Kendrick Perkins has a solution.

There is a way for Dallas to make this right. As soon as this season is over, you go out and get Kevin Durant. That’s how you make it right. Go get KD to pair alongside Kyrie (Irving) and AD.

Kendrick Perkins said

This suggestion raised his colleagues’ eyebrows but none of them disputed his logic. It makes sense from all angles if the Dallas Mavericks can trade for Kevin Durant. That would help quell some of the backlash they have received for trading away Luka Doncic.

Kevin Durant addition can make Mavs a super team

Kevin Durant has played with both Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson. Just like they both know how the two-time champion operates, the Slim Reaper also knows what he is going to get from them. Now add a prime Anthony Davis into the mix and the Mavericks look like a super team.

Davis can shore up the interior while Durant and Irving can torch the outside. Thompson can focus on perimeter defense and add in some three-pointers to the mix. There is no spacing problem like Durant faced with the Phoenix Suns.

Along with the plethora of options on their bench, the Dallas Mavericks could give the best in the league a run for their money. Sure, they will have to give up some of their younger players or other core pieces. But based off Perkins’ logic, the return will likely be an NBA title.

Patrick Dumont and the Adelson family need that title to help bring back the peace inside American Airlines Center. At the same time, that title can help GM Nico Harrison roam around in Dallas without a security team with him at all times.

The Phoenix Suns hold the key to this probability

The only problem in the way is if the Phoenix Suns want to trade with the Dallas Mavericks. They did try to send Kevin Durant to the Golden State Warriors. That means, they should not have a problem sending him to another conference rival.

The Suns are in a situation where they would want to either get the maximum draft capital possible or get some young stars in exchange. The Mavericks could send rising star Max Christie and a couple of picks to sweeten the deal.

But if the Suns do not like Christie or any of the draft picks on offer, they could avoid engaging in further discussions. Then the Mavericks will have to look for a trade partner whose assets the Suns like. However, all that supersedes all this is whether or not the two-time Finals MVP wants to join the Mavericks.
