Kevin Durant was instrumental in helping Draymond Green and the Golden State Warriors get past LeBron James and his Cleveland Cavaliers and win two NBA championships.
When he signed as a free agent, he courted a lot of backlash for joining a team that defeated his Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals.
It also mattered that the 2015–16 Warriors finished with the best regular-season record in NBA history. Therefore, fans and analysts believed the Slim Reaper’s controversial addition would elevate their offense to an entirely new dimension.
As one of the most prolific scorers in league history, Kevin Durant would naturally lean towards offense as the primary reason why players succeed and teams win titles. His former teammate, Green, did not agree:
Those who don’t believe defense is as valuable as it is, they simply just don’t win. I don’t think anyone’s ever really been hell-bent on caring about the opinion of those that don’t win, because your opinion equals zero.
Draymond Green told The Athletic’s Sam Amick
When the journalist reminded the former Defensive Player of the Year that Durant had won two championships with his offense, Green replied:
He won here, (and) the defense here was (incredible).
Draymond Green replied
This made it seem as if the 6′ 6″ forward was placing defense as the most important tool to win championships, and Durant’s 2 titles were due to Draymond Green and the Warriors’ defense.
Kevin Durant has a cheeky response to Draymond Green
It is not unusual for Draymond Green to talk about defense and how it impacts championship-winning teams. However, his claim that it was defense that helped Kevin Durant win his 2 titles seemingly did not sit well with the latter.
And the offense was????
Kevin Durant replied
His response suggests his former teammate is somewhere forgetting that it was the DC native’s offense that helped the Warriors overcome the Cavaliers.

LeBron James and his teammates had figured out how to defeat the Warriors, and they were poised to continue doing so over the next few years. Instead, Durant’s addition changed everything.
That offense was too much for the Cavaliers, and they were booted out of two consecutive NBA Finals by a combined 8-1 record. Durant’s production on the offensive side changed history.
Kevin Durant and his Rockets have started to surge
Kevin Durant joined the Houston Rockets this offseason with the intention that his leadership, experience, and offense would help the young team take the next step.

He and his new teammates did what they could, but still lost their opening two games. After that, the Paris Olympics gold medalist mentioned that those losses were going to light a fire inside them.
Since then, they have won four straight games and have started to climb the Western Conference ladder. If they can continue their pace, it might not be long before they start catching defending champions and his former team, the Thunder.
They are leading the league with their best-ever start, and are looking to continue it. As per the current schedule, the two sides are set to resume their battle in January.
By then, Durant and his Rockets should have closed the gap. Those battles most probably will shape how the West looks as they inch closer to the playoffs.
