Kevin Durant educates another NBA fan for mistaken attribution of Phoenix Suns’ defensive success

Kevin Durant

Kevin Durant is undoubtedly the most engaged star we’ve seen on NBA Twitter with fans. The Phoenix Suns superstar has been tweeting more often in the past few days, battling narratives that are being set by people not in the know about the team.

This past Saturday, Kevin Durant did his part in countering a narrative being cooked up by a Suns podcaster. KD called out Ben Garcia for making a video dedicated to explaining Devin Booker’s regression on offense, attributing blame to him. Durant decided to counter slander to his name from another segment of the Phoenix Suns media coverage. This time, it was John Volta’s turn to face the music.

Volta, who is the managing editor of the Bright Side Sun, posted a tweet implying that Durant’s absence had been beneficial to the team’s offense during their 2nd quarter explosion against the Toronto Raptors offense during their Monday win. Durant would be having none of that as he tweeted a succinct explanation for why the Suns’ offense looked good.

Switching everything defense and gettin out in transition from making them play bad offense. Pretty easy to see if u understand basketball.

Kevin Durant tweeted

These repeated attacks on Durant’s allegedly selfish style of basketball have been expertly countered by the 4-time scoring champion. After all, Durant is holding opponents to a paltry 41.4% field goal percentage on the defensive end. Meanwhile, he’s having the highest-scoring season by any 36-year-old in NBA history at 26.4 ppg. He’s been the lone consistent player as the rest of the Suns team flounders around him.

These repeated attacks on Durant’s effectiveness on both ends of the floor seem to have no clear motivation. A lot of it could be attributed to the Phoenix media’s attempts to deflect blame off their franchise player Devin Booker. It could also be a product of their increased despair at the team’s ineffectiveness following the first month of the season. But it’s clear that Durant will not be taking these personal attacks lying down.

How can Kevin Durant and the Phoenix Suns make the 2025 NBA playoffs?

Following their blowout win over the Toronto Raptors, the Suns find themselves only one game shy of Dallas in 10th place. With a 32-37 record and 13 games to play, it is now or never for this roster.

Their task of making the postseason has a high degree of difficulty. The Suns have the toughest remaining schedule in the NBA, going up against defending champions Boston twice, #1 seeds OKC and Cleveland once, and more games against the Houston Rockets, Golden State Warriors and the New York Knicks.

If they do manage to get the 10th seed and hang on to it, they will be rewarded with a play-in win-or-go-home game against the Sacramento Kings as things currently stand. If they beat Domantas Sabonis and co, they will face the loser of the 7th/8th seed game. The Los Angeles Clippers and the Minnesota Timberwolves currently occupy those slots. Both of these teams would be fancied against Phoenix in that game.

Their reward for all of this trouble would be facing the top-seeded OKC Thunder. OKC would be prohibitive favorites against all Western Conference opponents barring the Lakers. It would be a veritable homecoming of sorts for the greatest player in the franchise’s history, who might even be looking to trade for him if they are unable to win the NBA championship this season.
