Kevin Durant Reminds OKC Thunder Fans of Death Threats, Sends Olive Branch Ahead of Finals

Kevin Durant is the greatest player in OKC Thunder history, but the manner of his exit from the region was understandably acrimonious.

There are very few players in NBA history who can say they changed the course of basketball. Kevin Durant is certainly one of those players. After all, when he moved to Golden State as a free agent in 2016, it showed basketball fans how superteams could actually strip the NBA of enjoyment. The duo of Durant and Stephen Curry, simply put, was too overpowered for the rest of the NBA to handle.

NBA teams are still feeling the cascading effects of the KD signing to this day. Owners and GMs came together to make rules and prevent players and front offices from easily creating superteams. The CBA enforced since the 2023-24 NBA season makes it nearly impossible for teams to keep multiple All-NBA talents. It also punishes those paying repeater luxury taxes with steeper financial consequences than ever.

When Durant left OKC for Golden State, a lot of fans lost interest in the league. They felt it was too lopsided, and the outcome was too obvious for everyone. It did feel as though the 2016-19 Warriors were way too good for the Western Conference to handle. James Harden and co came close to an upset, but it would’ve been an improbable win. Either way, NBA fans still curse Durant out for his decision to sign there.

A fan tagged Durant in a tweet reminding OKC fans of what they went through nine summers ago. Durant, who has been more active than usual on NBA Twitter/X of late, did not like the mention. He posted a tweeted saying,

Why should I think about fans who wished death on me???? Hahaha Enjoy the finals brother

However, Durant deleted it for some reason, even though what he said was perfectly logical and sensible. After being called out for the same, KD posted yet another logical tweet with no logical response.

Durant then made another fan’s day with a sincere basketball answer to a nice hypothetical question. When asked whether the 2025 Thunder team would win against the 2012 Thunder, Durant replied:

Im not big on hypotheticals so idk but this 2025 thunder team, they are historically great. Great shooting all across the board, efficient go to scorer in deuce, size and athleticism all across the board, versatility, shooting big and bruiser big, great coaching. Just a flat out perfectly crafted unit. I fuck with their approach to basketball. They are puttin together great film to learn from

Kevin Durant could be on the move this summer

One of the reasons that Kevin Durant has been so active this past summer is the likelihood of him being on the move. He has already bade a goodbye of sorts to a Phoenix Suns media member. In all likelihood, Durant will be traded by the Suns since they are quite far away from the contenders they were in 2023.

Among the teams pursuing Durant this summer will be the Detroit Pistons, the Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs. All three of these teams have young franchise centerpieces. Two of these teams returned to the playoffs after four-year droughts and have looked really good. Adding Durant would give them the scoring punch and put them a tier or two above where they currently are.

If the OKC Thunder lose this year’s Finals, they could also pursue the Slim Reaper. It would be a return of the prodigal son of sorts – after all, Durant’s legacy is inextricably linked with OKC.
