Kevin Durant and LeBron James find themselves at the center of yet another GOAT debate soundbite involving Michael Jordan. The four-time NBA scoring champion was a guest on the four-time NBA MVP’s Mind The Game podcast recently.

In the second installment of the podcast, Durant waxed lyrical about how his own longevity and that of LeBron James is something that requires recommitting to a contract with their own selves to be engaged and take care of their bodies for the grind of another long NBA season. However, while doing so, Kevin Durant also took a sneaky shot at Michael Jordan, citing how Jordan took up baseball mid-way through his career.

This didn’t sit right with many factions of NBA fans on social media. For one thing, Jordan played all 82 games in eight of his 13 Chicago Bulls seasons. He even played all 82 games while battling a knee injury during his age-40 season with the Washington Wizards. His commitment to the game and his competitive spirit was undoubtedly beyond reproach.

When this was called out by fans on NBA Twitter, Durant stepped in to give his own side of why he took the shot at MJ:

Mj retired 3 times. It’s okay to call that out my brother, I got 1 million dollars worth of Mj shoes in my house hahaha. It’s okay, he retired 3 times and still the goat. Ima applaud that just like Ima applaud playing 22 years at an ELITE level. I like basketball tho, you love individuals more.

However, it wasn’t so much about the correctness of his words as the fact that he uttered them. NBA fans already suffer from a blind bias against past greats. Younger fans who haven’t done their homework and studied the history of the game often minimize what legends of the past went through and still clocked in. Kevin Durant could undoubtedly have praised LeBron James for his work ethic and dedication without the shot.

Kevin Durant roasts Stephen Curry fans after clarifying his Michael Jordan quote

Kevin Durant is, at this point, a staple on NBA Twitter. The man has been online and responding a lot more actively in the recent past than he used to in years past. After his back-and-forth on the Michael Jordan topic, a few Warriors fans tried to bring up how his career outside of Golden State has not had any championship success while questioning his ability to be the sole leader on a championship team.

Not one to take this kind of talk lying down, Durant shot back at the fan quickly. He first called him a non-athlete, and when pressed about his move to the Warriors, the Slim Reaper pointed out that the recruiting pitch came from Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green themselves.

It’s a reason they all got on that plane my boy lmaooo

The incident that Kevin Durant is referring to is when Draymond Green called him from the parking lot of Oracle Arena after the Warriors’ 2016 loss, after which Green, Curry, Andre Iguodala and Thompson flew out to the Hamptons to give Kevin Durant the recruiting pitch that convinced him to become a Warrior nine years ago.
