Kevin Durant has been one of the most ardent supporters of women’s basketball among NBA stars. The four-time scoring champion went viral in various videos alongside Team USA’s women’s team at Tokyo 2021 and Paris 2024.

Durant has praised Paige Bueckers, Caitlin Clark, Breanna Stewart and many other talented WNBA stars on social media. He has also tried to platform women’s sports on Boardroom, his podcast platform. Durant tweeted at the start of this season wishing the WNBA community a season with good health.

The two-time NBA Finals MVP has now turned up at Crypto.com Arena to catch the Sparks in action. Giving Durant company at the Los Angeles game are Lou Williams and Matt Barnes. The Sparks and Sky are both trying to end their losing streaks. Chicago is currently 0-2, while the Sparks have lost three games since Kelsey Plum’s debut game. The Sparks are leading 62-55 at the time of writing.

The Sparks are trying to enter a new era after finally landing help at the guard spot for their talented frontcourt. Kelsey Plum set a record for most points in a season opener with 37 this year. Plum has also put on a show for the Sparks, getting some able support from Azura Stevens and Dearica Hamby. Angel Reese has been one of the few bright spots for Chicago in the game thus far.

The 2025 WNBA season will have more or less the same championship contenders as the previous season. Although there has been some talent realignment, with Indiana and Dallas benefiting, the Minnesota Lynx and the New York Liberty have shown their mettle as last year’s finalists, playing a cut above their competition even early in this season.

The Sparks would consider anything above last season’s bottom-three finish an improvement. Currently missing both Cameron Brink and Rickea Jackson, the team would aim to round the season out stronger. Both Brink and Jackson have the ability to play at a WNBA All-Star level, and have different and unique abilities of their own. Brink is a defensive powerhouse, while Jackson is an all-around forward with a three-level scoring skillset.

Kevin Durant could be on the move this summer

The Phoenix Suns have been on the downturn since reaching the NBA Finals in 2021. Despite acquiring Kevin Durant in 2023, they have only won one playoff series in three seasons. They failed to make the playoffs in 2024-25 and are among the costliest teams of all time while doing this. Bradley Beal regressing and having a no-trade clause make any chances of championship contention a non-starter.

With all of this in mind, the Suns might be interested in making moves by retaining franchise star Devin Booker. Kevin Durant is the better player and a two-way contributor, but he’s also a better trade chip for assets. The Rockets are among the teams rumored to have a shot at landing the Slim Reaper. Phoenix would want to get their own first-round picks back from the Houston Rockets if they send Durant there.

Another interesting trade destination for Durant would be OKC. If the Thunder fail to capture the NBA championship this year, it would largely be because of a lack of scoring punch. Durant would be of immense help on that front, and Sam Presti has the assets to do it. The story of a prodigal son returning home aside, the OKC Thunder with Durant would be the definitive favorites to win the 2025-26 NBA title.
