Kevin Owens recently got candid about the recent condition of the independent circuit in professional wrestling. The independent circuit, often known as indies, is the wrestling promotions that operate under separate banners in the US and UK wrestling scenes. These promotions have been responsible for the rise of talents like Cody Rhodes, Drew McIntyre, and Sami Zayn.
Speaking on What Do You Wanna Talk About? with Cody Rhodes, Owens stated that he believes the independent wrestling promotion is fading from the scene. ‘The Prizefighter’ supported his statement by saying that it might be because talents are being signed with major promotions like WWE and AEW early in their career, which does not give them any time to grow independently.
Everything has changed so much. It almost feels, and I know I’m going to get in relative trouble for this with the fans. It almost feels like there is no independent scene anymore. I know there is, I just don’t know enough about it because it’s just not what it used to be.

The former Universal Champion added that earlier, there used to be a hype around what was happening in the independent circuit, like Cody Rhodes‘ tour across the world or ‘Homegrown Hero’ angles. But now it feels like the talent are working to get noticed by the WWE or AEW. Owens expressed his belief that it could be critical for the future of professional wrestling as a whole.
In the past few years, several independent wrestling promotions have lost their impact in professional wrestling. Popular indie promotion like ROH is now under the banner of AEW. Meanwhile, companies like PWG have not run any events since 2023. However, there are still a few promotions like GCW and MLW that are keeping the fire of the independent circuit alive in 2025.
Kevin Owens feels The Miz doesn’t get enough credit for his talent
The Miz is one of the most experienced talents on the current WWE roster. He has main-evented WrestleMania, won multiple World Titles, and even had some great Intercontinental Title reigns in his illustrious career. But recently, Kevin Owens shared his opinions on ‘The A-Lister’ and his abilities to work in professional wrestling.

In the same conversation on What Do You Wanna Talk About?, Owens revealed that during his time outside WWE, he used to look at The Miz with disbelief, questioning how he was main eventing WrestleMania. However, after working with ‘The Awesome One’ within the company, ‘The Prizefighter’ admitted that the former WWE Champion deserves far more credit than he typically receives.
If there is one guy that doesn’t get enough credit, it’s him. Even me. I’ll fully admit this, and I think I told Mike before. I watched WWE from the outside looking in as an independent wrestler, hoping to get to WWE. I’d see Miz and I’d go, ‘How the f*** is this guy main eventing WrestleMania? How the f*** is this guy always in the top angles?’ I know why once I worked with him once. That’s why.

The former Universal Champion added that The Miz has a unique ability to make any storyline feel important. He highlighted the veteran’s skill in adapting to any role, whether as a heel or a babyface. Owens noted that this versatility, combined with the veteran’s passion for his craft, is what makes him one of the greatest of all time in professional wrestling.
Kevin Owens reveals his neck injury is pretty much frustrating
Kevin Owens suffered a neck injury earlier this year in March, just ahead of WrestleMania. As a result of this significant setback, WWE was forced to pull ‘The Prizefighter’ from all ongoing storylines, including his highly anticipated match against Randy Orton at ‘The Show of Shows’. While fans initially hoped for a quick recovery, the Canadian superstar recently shared new details about the severity of his injury.

Speaking with Cody Rhodes on What Do You Wanna Talk About?, the former Universal Champion revealed that he’s been experiencing all the typical symptoms associated with a neck injury. He shared that he suffers from neck pain and occasional numbness or unresponsiveness in his legs, describing the situation as extremely frustrating.
In the last week, for some reason, the symptoms all came in one shot. Every symptom you’d expect me to have, the pain in the neck, the stuff going down the arms, the legs not really responding, it’s all been happening. So it’s been pretty f—ing brutal. I can’t wait for the surgery. And then to move forward, whatever that looks like — but it’s been very frustrating.

However, Owens expressed confidence that he will be alright once he undergoes surgery, which is scheduled for this month. He described the injury as brutal and admitted that it has made his future in WWE quite uncertain for the time being.
