John Cena made his return at the Money in the Bank PLE and announced his retirement. He stated that 2025 would be his final year in WWE and that he would bid adieu to his in-ring career. Since then, several superstars have expressed their desire to face Big Match John before he finally hangs up his boots. Kevin Owens is the latest to join that list, as he has also spoken about his retirement.
While speaking in an interview with the Daily Mail, Kevin Owens opened up about how he felt regarding John Cena‘s retirement announcement. The Prizefighter recalled a very specific fact: May 31, 2025, will mark the 10th anniversary of his first match against Cena. He stated that, if not on the same day, he would love to face the 16-time champion any day before The Doctor of Thugonomics retires.
Owens revealed that Cena was the one who pulled him out of NXT and placed him on the main roster. He added that The Leader of Cenation was always there for him whenever he needed advice. The former Universal Champion felt it would be an honor to wrestle a legend like Cena once again. In 2015, Owens, then a young rising star, shocked the world by defeating the future Hall of Famer in a non-title champion vs. champion match on debut.
Recently, the 39-year-old star got a world title opportunity against his dear friend Cody Rhodes. Although they had a hard-hitting match and both tried to walk out of Berlin as the champion, The American Nightmare emerged victorious. Many fans predicted that Owens would turn heel on the champ and show his ruthless side once again, but that did not happen.
Kevin Owens hinted at a potential tag team match with Randy Orton in the future
Recently, popular rapper and singer Machine Gun Kelly appeared on Logan Paul‘s podcast. He revealed some details about his meeting with Randy Orton during the SummerSlam weekend, expressing how the legend had said negative things about him. After the controversy, Kevin Owens sent a message on social media, showing which side he was on.
The 39-year-old star took to X and shared a picture of himself with The Viper, alongside Paul and MGK on the other side. With this post, he hinted at a potential tag team match against the former U.S. Champ and the popular rapper, with Orton as his partner. The Prizefighter was embroiled in a heated rivalry and even had a match against him at the Royal Rumble PLE but failed to defeat him.
The controversy grew even bigger when stars like Xavier Woods also commented on it, showing their support for The Legend Killer. Owens admitted that being in a tag team with Orton was one of the best times he ever had in his career. It will be intriguing to see if the match that the former Universal Champion indirectly suggested takes place.
