Kevin Stefanski found himself in a pinch following Shedeur Sanders’ latest claim. The rookie from Colorado declared himself a better quarterback than most in the NFL.
Despite impressing a great many in the preseason, the Browns placed Sanders on their practice squad. Stefanski chose Joe Flacco as the starter and Sanders’ fellow rookie, Dillon Gabriel, as Flacco’s backup.
Back-to-back defeats against the Cincinnati Bengals and the Baltimore Ravens raised questions about Stefanski’s methods. A last-gasp win in week three over the Green Bay Packers did little to quiet down the plea to start Sanders.
Speaking with the media on Friday, the Browns’ head coach disclosed whether Sanders has a chance to start in the coming weeks.
[Shedeur’s] doing a good job. I hope all of our guys feel like they’re ready, and they’re working very hard [at it]. We do a lot of work with our players, rookies, vets, and all our guys, spending every available minute that we have with them, getting them ready physically and mentally, whether it’s in the weight room, the meeting room, [or] out on the field. So, all of our guys are working very hard.

Earlier in the week, Sanders stirred the pot by claiming that he was “capable of doing better than” most quarterbacks in the league.
It’s obvious a lot of teams would be playing me, but that’s not in God’s plan right now.

Sanders was drafted 144th overall by the Browns. GM Andrew Berry traded up into the fifth round to select the former CU starter. Gabriel was drafted two rounds earlier.
Shedeur Sanders turned down two NFL teams before accepting the Browns’ offer
HOF Deion Sanders, who coached Shedeur in Colorado, recently revealed that two other clubs besides the Browns called them during draft day.

Philly [Philadelphia Eagles] called us on draft day. They didn’t mention that. I just let a cat out of the bag. Philly called. Who [else] was it? Baltimore [Ravens] and the Browns.
Deion Sanders said during a recent appearance on the New Heights podcast
Sanders turned both teams down because he did not want to sit on the bench for the next two to three years.
How in the world can somebody fault him for saying or thinking, ‘Why in the world would I go back up Lamar for 10 more years?’ Like, who comes in with that mindset?
Coach Prime revealed
The 23-year-old made his debut in a preseason win over the Carolina Panthers. He completed 60% of his passes for 2 touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Sander sat out the following fixture due to an injury before playing a handful of snaps in the final friendly. Cleveland won the game by two points, but Sanders was taken off after just 3 completions for 50 yards.
The Browns travel to Detroit to face off against the 2-1 Lions. Dan Campbell’s Lions lost the opening day fixture to the Green Bay Packers before dismantling the Chicago Bears and snatching a late win over the Baltimore Ravens.
These two teams have played each other 21 times in the past, with the Lions leading the series 5-16. However, the Sunday fixture at Ford Field will be their first meeting since 2021.
