UFC 322 turned out to be a massive success for Islam Makhachev and his mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov. After all, Makhachev accomplished something the ‘Eagle’ himself never achieved by becoming a double champion, marking a significant milestone in his legacy. Following the win, the entire Dagestani team was seen celebrating their victory together with pride and undeniable unity.
In their first celebration, former teammate and Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier was present and joined them during emotional moments. DC brought food for Makhachev and shared it generously, creating a lighthearted moment in their post-fight celebration. The veteran said everything tastes good after becoming a double champion, showing excitement around Makhachev’s achievement.
The newly crowned welterweight champion agreed with the statement and subtly mentioned Nurmagomedov, highlighting that he had never attempted that. He added, “Brother, not many people understand,” prompting loud cheers from everyone present as they understood the sneaky implications.

Nurmagomedov enjoyed an undefeated career, yet some critics continue questioning his legacy because he never moved up in weight classes. Cormier was a dominant double champion from AKA and often joked about Nurmagomedov never achieving double-champion status during their competitive years.
Now the situation has shifted, with Nurmagomedov proudly celebrating Makhachev’s win and playfully reminding DC about those past comments. Back then, Cormier held two belts simultaneously and successfully defended championships in different UFC divisions as a rare accomplishment.
Makhachev remained incredibly joyful during this journey because he had dedicated his entire life to working hard and achieving greatness. He credited Khabib Nurmagomedov for consistently sacrificing personal time and traveling specifically to assist him throughout his demanding training camp.
Dana White highlighted Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov’s prediction that Khabib would dominate the UFC before eventually passing the torch to Makhachev. That prophetic statement became reality as both champions fulfilled the legendary coach’s vision through discipline and unmatched competitive excellence.
Islam Makhachev’s next target at UFC White House event?
Following his impressive victory, Islam Makhachev jokingly asked Donald Trump to prepare the gates for his upcoming White House event. One prominent name connected with Makhachev after the win is current lightweight champion Ilia Topuria, who immediately reacted online.

‘El Matador’ posted a fiery message on X, warning Islam Makhachev directly and criticizing his wrestling-heavy style as extremely boring. Topuria’s comments sparked further debate among fans, who wondered whether his striking abilities could challenge Makhachev’s dominant grappling approach.
Meanwhile, many respected experts, including champion Sean O’Malley, expressed admiration for Makhachev, praising his composure, control, and technical brilliance throughout. O’Malley later shared enthusiastic thoughts on social media, claiming a potential showdown between Makhachev and Topuria would captivate global audiences.
It will be a lot closer of a fight than Islam vs Jack was. Islam vs Ilia would be the biggest, most skillful fight of all time. They’re both 10/10 in MMA. There are a couple of people in MMA who have that skill set who can strike, wrestle, and jiu-jitsu.

Islam Makhachev liked competing at welterweight because he no longer needed to endure harsh weight cuts that drained him regularly. He explained that the higher division made him feel incredibly strong and significantly transformed his lifestyle inside and outside competition.
Because of these changes, many believe Makhachev may never return to lightweight since welterweight now suits his physical attributes perfectly. Apart from Ilia Topuria, Makhachev has expressed interest in challenging Kamaru Usman to surpass his incredible welterweight title defense record.
A showdown with Usman would offer Makhachev a massive test while allowing him to cement dominance across two stacked divisions. Experts believe welterweight provides Makhachev with new motivation as he finds bigger challenges that push him toward achieving even greater greatness.
