Surging Irish welterweight Ian Garry takes on the dangerous Shavkat Rakhmonov in a few days. They hash it out on the co-main event spot at UFC 310 for five rounds. Garry, still undefeated, has some clear title aspirations. As a matter of fact, he has more. Now, his lofty dreams catch a stray from a weight class above – Khamzat Chimaev.
Ian Machado Garry takes his cue from Irish compatriot and consensus superstar Conor McGregor. Already vying for such limits, he has lofty expectations in mind. Garry vs. Rakhmonov will decide on who will fight the injured kingpin Belal Muhammad next. Garry though, is already looking beyond Shavkat Rakhmonov and UFC 310:
The Irishman’s eight-fight UFC unbeaten streak at welterweight is the second-longest active streak in the division behind Belal Muhammad’s 11. A recent member of Team Chute Boxe, led by Diego Lima, Garry is also enthusiastically working on his ground game. He recently made intelligent work of point-striker Michael Page, vastly outgrappling his dangers.
Other than Kamaru Usman, he is the only one to start at the exclusive “8-0” club at welterweight in the promotion. Touting that ‘Mystic Mac’ attack demeanor, the Irishman claimed he can tackle explosive bursts from the best of the best. However, Khamzat Chimaev warns him off on it. Check what he had to say on it below:
? Ian Garry states his ideal scenario of becoming double champion:
— Championship Rounds (@ChampRDS) December 2, 2024
“I fight and beat Shavkat, I win the world title, I go up to middleweight and I fight Khamzat and I win that belt too.
I’m not afraid of any man.”

Khamzat Chimaev is a rare case of explosive freestyle wrestling/lean-ins mixed with somewhat decent striking. Undefeated, the Chechen ‘Borz’ recently ran through middleweight legend Robert Whittaker with a violent face-crank at UFC 308. Hence, he warned Garry of his prowess, dousing himself as able to munch his head, clear off. However, Garry, at just 27, has reason to be so bold.
Ian Machado Garry reveals Charles Oliveira will be cornering him at UFC 310 co-mains
Chimaev is currently #3 in the middleweight division and could be tapping for the next 185lb title shot against current kingpin Dricus Du Plessis. The wolf who dabbles in welterweight aside, Ian Garry has his plate full for the UFC 310 PPV co-main event this weekend in Las Vegas. Shavkat Rakhmonov, 18-0, boasts a hundred percent finish rate in an all-around manner.
Garry has been dreaming of the day he fights the unbeaten middleweight terror, as well as the Kazakh peer from Team Kill Cliff FC. Now, he has an uphill task. Unlike Garry, Rakhmonov has never seen the judges’ scorecard, with 18 perfect finishers. Hence, the Irishman is deploying one of the best all-around submissions specialists/finishers to do it, Charles Oliveira.
A little extra help wouldn’t go amiss. If Garry does win, he has a straight shot to gold as the No. 1 seed. At just 27, Garry would have the chance to become one of the UFC’s youngest champions on the current roster. Whether that title dream reaches a step closer at UFC 310 remains to be seen.
