UFC middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis just defended his title for the second time in a row. DDP won a dominant fight against former champion Sean Strickland showcasing why he’s the king of the division. Going forward fans are excited about his next opponent, and it seems like Khamzat Chimaev might be the one after UFC 312.
Dricus Du Plessis has frequently talked about his intentions to fight Chimaev, and shut down the hype train. With the recent win at UFC 312, the South African fighter has further extended his undefeated streak and is full of confidence. At the post-fight presser, Du Plessis confirmed that Chimaev is next in line and he’s also sent a message.

It was in reference to Khamzat Chimaev pulling out of UFC Saudi Arabia last year before his fight with Robert Whittaker. The Chechen warrior got extremely sick and was hospitalized. Nevertheless, he made his comeback later at UFC 308. In his last fight, ‘Borz’ managed to break Whittaker’s jaw via submission, and issued a threat to DDP.

Du Plessis, however, doesn’t care and is ready for any challenge. The champion has great confidence in his wrestling as well as striking capabilities. The South African star believes he’s one of the pound-for-pound best in the world, and aims to become the greatest fighter in the history of MMA.

The last time Dricus Du Plessis and Sean Strickland went against each other, it ended controversially. Going into the fight, both fighters had shared back-and-forth insults further hyping up the rivalry. Strickland promised to give fans a war, but the reality was quite different.

Throughout the fight, ‘Tarzan’ maintained his jab and teep strategy. However, he failed to be the aggressor. As a result, there were times when the bout lacked action which attracted boos from the fans. In a recent interview, DDP addressed the boos and shared his point of view.
At a stage when I heard the boos, it drove me crazy. I knew they weren’t booing me and I was like c’mon dude fight me. The first and second round I was piecing him up…. People pay a lot of money to be here. If it was boring, I’m really sorry, but that’s not my fault. I went forward.

It isn’t the first time Strickland has disappointed his fans. On the other hand, DDP tried his best to engage. He looked less chaotic than his usual self and showed more crisp striking. Going forward it would be interesting to see how long the champion keeps his title reign.
