Jalen Brunson draws comparison to Chris Paul

Jalen Brunson had an unprecedented playoff run last season that saw the New York Knicks star take the league by storm. As his rise to stardom in the Mecca of basketball grew fast, comparisons and hot takes from analysts and former players started to flood the internet.

The star guard for the Knicks now finds himself in another peculiar comparison, albeit one that he wouldn’t mind much. On the latest episode of Gilbert Arenas’ Gil’s Arena podcast, the former 3x All-Star compared Brunson’s playstyle with none other than future Hall of Famer Chris Paul.

Arenas and the Crew discussed the similarities in the probing nature of Brunson and Paul’s game, even going on to call the New York Guard a “Scoring Chris Paul.”

He’s a scoring Chris Paul. Chris Paul controls the game for his passes.

Gilbert Arenas said

Arenas went on to dig deeper into the comparisons between two of the premier guards in the NBA. Following a 13-game playoff stretch that saw Brunson average 32.4 points at 53.6% true shooting, Agent Zero called Brunson’s probing scoring playstyle similar to Chris Paul’s probing passing. The similarities between the two guards definitely pop up, with their probing playstyle and physical play for undersized guards in the modern NBA.

Brunson is a Chris Paul who scores, (Brunson) is not going to hit two threes and then go down and try to take a 40-foot shot just for a heat check.

Gilbert Arenas stated

These comparisons are high praise for Brunson, who has a history with Paul. The Villanova Guard grew up admiring Paul’s game and was also coached by the 12x All-Star in high school. Drawing comparisons to his mentor will certainly encourage the Knicks star to power his team even further this season.

Knicks crown Jalen Brunson “King of New York”

With the addition of Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges in the offseason, the New York Knicks continue to ascend toward championship contention. The team solidified itself as a powerhouse in the Eastern Conference during a playoff run that saw them knock out the Philadelphia 76ers and Joel Embiid.

However, with their star-studded roster additions, many questioned the leader of the team for the upcoming season. But the Knicks and Josh Hart have put those rumors to rest after crowning the Villanova Guard the ‘King of New York.’

He’s the King of New York.

Josh Hart said after a practice session during Knicks training camp

High praise like this certainly isn’t new to Jalen Brunson, who earned his (k)nickname as the King of New York from none other than Agent Zero himself during a July episode of Gil’s Arena. After an offseason that saw the star guard take on a team-friendly four-year, $104 million contract extension, Brunson will look to rocket himself into MVP contention and drive the Knicks toward a championship.
