Kirk Cousins threw four interceptions on the day he needed to perform his best. Even though the veteran quarterback signed a four-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons, his future remains uncertain.

The Falcons played the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday in Week 13 after an extended break and wanted to bounce back from a 6-38 drubbing from the Broncos in week 11. It backfired big time as the 36-year-old threw four picks.

The worst of the bunch has to be his second INT. Near the end of the third quarter, the Falcons had the ball on fourth and five. Cousins snapped the ball and threw the slowest pass of his career, intended for Darnell Mooney, but was snagged by Chargers cornerback Tarheeb Still for a 61-yard pick-six.

Still had a lock on Cousins throughout the game. The home call wasn’t the only time he proved to be a nuisance for the Falcons. The rookie defensive back from Maryland caught the first INT of the game, early in the second quarter.

Cousins missed a couple of third-down conversions to hand the ball over to the Chargers. His third turnover took place inside the Chargers endzone by Marcus Maye, who ended a good Falcons drive. Three of the final four Atlanta drives ended in interceptions as Derwin James bagged the last one.

The season started off brightly for Cousins in Atlanta, but teams seem to have figured him out as the season progressed. Jim Harbaugh’s Chargers are among the better defensive units in the NFL, and they made sure to keep Cousins under pressure the entire game, and it worked like a charm.

Cousins ended the game with 24 completions, 245 yards, and zero touchdowns. In the last three games (all losses), he has a record of 6 interceptions and 4 fumbles. This was the first time since 2014 that Cousins threw four INTs in one game.

The cry from the Falcons fans is simple: they want to see more of rookie Michael Penix Jr. get chances. At the same time, they must remember that Atlanta is 6-6 and has a great chance of playing post-season.

Starting a complete novice at this point in time will only decrease the win probability, even though it will inject more excitement into the team.
