The Los Angeles Chargers gained a massive win in Week 13 as they routed the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Falcons’ chances to top the NFC South have taken a massive blow.
In a low-scoring game, the Chargers edged out the Falcons 17-13. Once off to a strong start, the Falcons are now on a three-game skid, managing just 36 points in that stretch. Amid the struggles, quarterback Kirk Cousins accepted responsibility for the loss.
Cousins, 36, from Holland, Michigan joined the Dirty Birds earlier this year after a six-season stint with the Minnesota Vikings. Although, he started impressively with record-breaking performances, it has waned in the recent games. In the loss to the Chargers, Cousins completed 24-of-39 passes for 245 yards but threw four embarrassing interceptions.
In the post-game interview, Cousins admitted that he got to play better.
Cousins hadn’t thrown more than three interceptions in a game since 2014, but on Sunday, he threw picks on three of Atlanta’s last four drives. In back-to-back losses, he’s failed to throw a touchdown—a first in his career as a full-time starter since 2015.
Kirk Cousins is safe despite 4 interception game against the Chargers
Cousins had one of his worst days as a starter on Sunday. Despite being recharged off a bye week, the Michigander couldn’t reclaim the form he showcased in the first part of the season.
Cousins’ role as a starter next year largely depended on his performance coming from a bye week. The Falcons have an option beyond the 36-year-old in their artillery for now. In the 2024 NFL Draft, they drafted Michael Penix Jr., in a surprising move considering they spent some huge amount on Cousins just months earlier. Albeit calls for Cousins’ benching from fans, he is safe for the time being.
Raheem Morris, the first-year coach at the Georgian outfit, confirmed that Cousins will remain the starter for the coming week as well, via Josh Kendall of The Athletic.
Next, Cousins and the Falcons head up to US Bank Stadium to face the Minnesota Vikings in Week 14.
