The game of football pushes the players to better every week, to watch the film, and to learn from every single mistake. A win sometimes is just a win, especially when it was as narrow as when the Atlanta Falcons beat the Philadelphia Eagles. This is what Falcons QB Kirk Cousins is going through.

The Atlanta Falcons pulled a last-minute brilliance to stun the Eagles 22-21 on Monday night at the Lincoln Financial Field in front of the Eagles’ fans. The Falcons won in Philadelphia for the first time since 2012, while Cousins bettered his MNF record to a 4-10.

The story didn’t start pretty. As the clock inched closer to running out, the Falcons were still trailing by six points. Around one minute to go, Cousins led a six-play, 70-yard drive with no timeouts, culminating in a seven-yard touchdown pass to Drake London with just 34 seconds remaining. In the subsequent kick, marred by a penalty received by London, Younghoe Koo drilled it perfectly to complete the win.

Despite the last-minute drive upsetting Philadelphia, Cousins felt that there were more things that they had to work on. He, nevertheless, wished that the drive would give them a boost as they move ahead in the season.

I didn't feel like I was sharp enough today, accurate enough. I gotta be better. But that last drive hopefully can give us a boost going into next week, we can build on that.. I was pleased with the way we finished tonight but there's still so much to better with.
Kirk Cousins said to Lisa Salters of ESPN

There’s some truth to what Cousins said. If not for the Saquon Barkley drop with 1:46 minutes left on the clock, the result would have been completely different. Furthermore, a specific play by Cousins when he missed three open WRs at third down. The failed conversion during the two-minute warning also looms on the QB as he earlier revealed he isn’t 100% coming from the injury.

Kirk Cousins shares emotions with GM after game-winning MNF drive in Philadelphia

Through these past seven years, the Atlanta Falcons haven’t won a single playoff game. Their hunt for the same started with GM Terry Fontenot bringing in Cousins during the off-season. In light of Monday’s game, Cousins and Fontenot shared a heavily enthusiastic hug and a dap as the former walked into the lockers.

Fontenot has been blamed as a general manager for his decision to pay Cousins a hefty sum of money and eventually draft Micheal Penix Jr in the NFL Draft. Months later, it is still seen as a shocking decision by some. However, the consensus is not all the same now.

Some believe it is time to bench the veteran and bring in the rookie even after the second-half antics in Philly. Earlier, HC Raheem Morris acknowledged Cousins is a bit rusty.

The visions of Fontenot would be further tested as the Falcons play the Kansas City Chiefs in their next game. They are clear favorites for a first NFC South crown since 2016 as the Falcons have the easiest schedule in terms of playing records of opponents in 2023.
