Since the demise of Kirk Herbstreit’s beloved golden retriever, Ben, last week, the American sports commentator has been navigating his work with a heavy heart. After taking some time off his demanding schedule, Herbstreit embarked on a trip to Philadelphia for the thrilling Thursday Night Football match between the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders, joined by a new furry friend.
While replacing Ben will undoubtedly be a challenge for the College GameDay analyst, his little brother Peter has helped fill the void left by Ben’s demise last week. That’s why, Herbstreit had little Peter accompanying him on his travel plans for the next few days.
Kirk Herbstreit shared the picture of Ben’s golden retriever brother on his social media on Thursday, replying to a fan asking whether Peter has been in training alongside Ben.
He has been in training (with Ben and the other 2 boys) since he moved into the house last December. Here he is today getting ready for the game. Took him over to the “Rocky Steps”!

After attending the NFL TNF match, Herbstreit will be headed to Georgia for a production meeting, after which, he has plans to fly home for his son’s high school football playoff match. The ESPN analyst is expected to be back in Athens on Saturday to call the SEC showdown between Georgia and Tennessee on College GameDay.
Kirk Herbstreit mourns loss of his beloved golden retriever Ben
Ever since the co-host of “Thursday Night Football” began bringing his furry friend Ben to football stadiums, he became everyone’s beloved furry friend. Unfortunately, after fighting his battle with cancer for some time, he took his last breath on November 7 in Herbstreit’s arms.

He was diagnosed with leukemia and lymphoma earlier this year in March, and despite Herbstreit’s efforts to treat it through chemo injections, surgeries, and three-day Vitamin C IV, the cancer spread across all his organs, and he died at the age of 10.
I’ve had dogs my whole life but Ben was 1 (of) 1. He was smart-loving-gentle-patient-inquisitive and welcoming to all. Always a big smile and a soft tail wag.
Kirk Herbstreit wrote in a heartfelt goodbye note for Ben on X
This is really hard to write but so many of you have loved and cared about Ben that I wanted to let you know. We found out today the cancer had spread throughout Bens organs and there was nothing left we could do-we had to let him go. I’ve had dogs my whole life but Ben was 1 on… pic.twitter.com/jDvPTbNv2M

Ben was undeniably a canine legend and a prominent figure in college football broadcasts for years. Filling in the paws of his big brother Ben would not be easy for Peter, but he appears to be adjusting quickly to the task.
