IPL 2021: Who will win today’s match? – KKR vs MI, Match 5

An upbeat Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will face defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) who find themselves in familiar territory after losing the first match, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. KKR defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in their campaign opener by notching up a big score of 187 before defending it albeit with difficulty, as they clinched it by 10 runs.

MI on the other hand, were defeated by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their first match and although it is a setback for the side, they would be extremely confident of making a comeback like they have done for the past 8 years or so. The MI vs KKR fixture is famous for having one of the most shocking head-to-head scorelines: MI have won 21 of the sides’ 27 matches with KKR winning just 6, so despite the recent form, this could turn out in favour of MI.

Both sides would fancy their chances to win this one – KKR due to their confidence-boosting win over SRH and MI due to their history against KKR and for turning things around after a bad start. This could turn out to be a fascinating contest but MI would feel they are favourites and rightly so. On paper, the Men in Blue clearly seem like the better-equipped side as compared to the more inexperienced KKR side.

KKR’s middle-order was a concern in their first match (with the exception of Dinesh Karthik) and it was their uncapped players – Nitish Rana and Rahul Tripathi who helped post a big score. If MI can prize the men in form out early which they are more than capable of, they could expose the middle-order. Further, MI would want to finish strongly with the bat after what happened against RCB and if they do that and return to the vintage MI everybody knows of, KKR would have it difficult.
