- Kolkata Knight Riders have lost all five of their opening matches in IPL 2026, marking the first time in franchise history they remain winless this far into the season.
- The team suffered a 32-run defeat to Chennai Super Kings, with key players struggling and a poor performance from their middle order.
- Criticism has arisen over KKR's decision to appoint Andre Russell as coach, with former player Mohammad Kaif suggesting his on-field presence could have positively impacted the team's performance.
After suffering their fourth defeat of the season, the Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL 2026 campaign appears to have reached its lowest point. Losing to Chennai Super Kings, a team that has also struggled, has left the current KKR team with an undesirable record.
At the MA Chidambaram Stadium, the result went CSK’s way, as they secured a convincing 32-run victory. Batting first, the home side managed 192/5, guided by contributions from Sanju Samson (48 off 32), Dewald Brevis (41 off 29), and Ayush Mhatre (38 off 17). Although CSK seemed set to cross the 200-run mark after a strong powerplay start of 72 runs, disciplined bowling by KKR kept the batters under check.
KKR’s decision to reinstate Sunil Narine as an opener did not pay off, as both he and Finn Allen were dismissed with just 29 runs on the board. KKR’s middle-order struggled to score against CSK spinners Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad, with the latter finishing with figures of 3/21. Although Rovman Powell (31 off 22) and Ramandeep Singh (35 off 23) managed a 63-run partnership for the 7th wicket, the match was long lost.

The defeat meant that the 2024 champions have now failed to win all five of their opening games in IPL 2026. KKR began the season with losses to MI and SRH, followed by a no-result against PBKS and a close defeat to LSG.
It is the first time in the franchise’s 19-year history that it has failed to win a game this far. KKR’s previous worst start to an IPL season was in 2021, when they managed to secure just a win in their first five matches, but went on to stage a famous comeback to make it to the final that year.

Kolkata Knight Riders had also endured a similar start in 2009. Coming back to their ongoing streak, the three-time IPL-winning franchise has struggled, with a major reason being the injury crisis, which has left them without key pacers like Harshit Rana and Akash Deep. Moreover, KKR’s INR 25.20 crore summer acquisition, Cameron Green, has only managed 56 runs and a wicket, adding to their woes.

KKR is now reeling at the bottom of the IPL table, with just a point and a poor Net Run-Rate (NRR) of -1.383. Captain Ajinkya Rahane also finds his role under scrutiny as well, with only a win over GT in their next match might bring relief to the side.
Andre Russell as coach? Former India cricketer slams KKR’s ‘blunder’ move
KKR’s dismal performance in the ongoing IPL 2026 season has drawn significant criticism, with the Knights having lost four out of the five matches it has played so far. Former all-rounder Mohammad Kaif, however, pointed to a strange reason for the franchise’s struggles.

On his YouTube channel, the 45-year-old hit out at what he termed as KKR’s ‘biggest mistake’ of IPL 2026, West Indies and IPL great Andre Russell‘s transition from a player to the team’s power-hitting coach. Kaif boldly claimed that even an injured Russell could wreak havoc, given his status as a match-winner. He also pointed to how Russell’s presence in the dugout alone could still intimidate opposition bowlers.
Mohammad Kaif added that by appointing him as an assistant coach and keeping him off the field, KKR effectively neutralized their most important player. He suggested that the 37-year-old could have featured, as he continues to play in franchise T20 leagues around the world. Furthermore, the former India player also pointed towards the contrast with Australian Cameron Green, whom KKR bought to replace Russell. He said on his YouTube channel:
What I’m saying is, if a player like Andre Russell is ready to play even on one leg, then you should play him. Even his presence in the dugout puts pressure on the opposition team, and the team is clearly missing him.
In his final season as a player, Russell was a noteworthy performer. He had scored 167 runs in ten innings at a blistering strike-rate of 163.73, while also picking up eight wickets at an average of 27.12 in IPL 2025.
