- Jayson Tatum returned to Madison Square Garden less than a year after tearing his Achilles tendon there.
- Knicks fans applauded Tatum during his return, despite him being a rival player.
- Tatum scored 24 points but the Celtics lost to the Knicks 112-106, impacting their playoff standings.
Less than 11 months ago, Jayson Tatum was seemingly done for a year when he tore his Achilles tendon during the second round of the playoffs at Madison Square Garden.
It was a non-contact injury, and the Boston Celtics forward had to be helped off the court. Immediately after, they booked him for surgery, and the doctors went to work on repairing his tendon.
After it was announced that it was over, fans believed the Duke alum would miss the entirety of the 2025-26 season as recovery for such injuries takes time.
Veteran star Damian Lillard, who tore his Achilles tendon in the first round, and Indiana Pacers’ star Tyrese Haliburton, who injured his in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, were ruled out for this season.
However, the father of two was determined to ace his recovery and get back onto a court as soon as possible. Remarkably, he took just 298 to achieve that.
Some have remarked that he would not have returned had Jaylen Brown not guided the Celtics to second in the Eastern Conference. Whatever that may be, Tatum was back playing and was working his way back to full fitness.
Then came the time to play in Madison Square Garden, the same place that 11 months ago had left him wondering if he could continue playing basketball.

Jayson Tatum was nervous returning to Madison Square Garden
Any normal person will have a reluctance to return to a place that cost them in some manner. That is why, when Taylor Rooks asked him about his return to Madison Square Garden, the place where he tore his Achilles tendon, Jayson Tatum took some time before answering.
I’m not over it. I still am a little anxious knowing that something I thought would never happen, it happened to me. In all honesty, my life changed a little bit. I’m not thrilled. It’ll probably be tough for me. Emotionally, it was like the worst day of my life.
Jayson Tatum replied
The 28-year-old added that he was nervous about returning to play at the hallowed basketball arena, knowing it almost made him think about quitting the game that has been his entire life.
"I was afraid for somebody to tell me, 'you're a shell of yourself.'"

Even though he is back, and at the time of this interview, was about to play there again, he was feeling the jitters, as if he had still not overcome the ‘trauma’ from that injury.
Jayson Tatum could not lead his Celtics to win at MSG
After stepping onto the court at Madison Square Garden, Jayson Tatum knew that he had to go through his healing process on his own.
Without fellow teammate and All-Star Jaylen Brown, it would be up to the six-time All-Star to lead his Celtics to win against the home team.

He did do what he could and finished the game with 24 points, 13 rebounds, and eight assists. However, to get those points, he took 22 attempts from the field. That inefficiency does not work against good teams.
The Knicks pounced on those chances and mounted a late charge that put the game away from the hands of their heated rivals for good. The home team won the game with a score of 112-106.
With that win, they also managed to stop the Boston Celtics from cementing second place in the Eastern Conference. Two games are remaining, and two more losses could tilt the standings.
However, with the struggling New Orleans Pelicans arriving at TD Garden, chances are Jayson Tatum can still lead his team to not just win that game, but also ensure that they will face the seventh seed from their conference in the playoffs.
