President Donald Trump loves sports and has several friends in the industry. When it comes to basketball, he does not enjoy that much of a fan following, but some owners, such as the New York Knicks’ James Dolan, are among them.

The billionaire famously rented out Madison Square Garden to the Republican Party so that they could stage Trump’s biggest campaign rally in the state of New York.

That decision came with a lot of heat, as his open support annoyed most fans. Dolan doubled down with a 6-figure donation to Donald Trump’s campaign.

However, that does not mean he allows the President to do anything he pleases. The White House’s official X page posted an altered version of the Knicks logo featuring the words ‘Trump is your President’.

The 47th President’s name was featured in the franchise’s hallmark orange, while the remaining was in white over blue, which is their predominant jersey color. This logo was an attempt to mock Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani.

That tweet was online for a while, but soon went missing. When Front Office Sports spoke with the organization, they were informed that after discussions, the White House page voluntarily took the post down.

The Knicks remain neutral on political matters. We hope all our elected officials, whether current or recently elected, do a great job in office.

James Dolan ensures his businesses ferociously protect their intellectual property. That explains why, despite supporting Trump along with other NBA team owners, he was not going to allow the President to exploit his team.

Before Donald Trump, Knicks forced Zohran Mamdani to take down altered logo

President Donald Trump and his staff did not just come up with this idea of an altered Knicks logo by themselves. They essentially designed their own version after noticing what New York Mayor candidate Zohran Mamdani did.

His version read ‘New York Zohran’, and was used in a basketball-themed campaign that was aired during the team’s season-opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

At the time, the Knicks organization sent a cease and desist letter, prompting Mamdani’s campaign to take it down after the team threatened legal action.

Zohran Mamdani then attended a Knicks game, while his rivals also did the same. Eventually, his campaign message worked in his favor, and he won the New York Mayoral election by 50.4% of the votes.

That win was even though owner James Dolan, through his MSG Entertainment, ran ads against some of the Democratic candidates’ proposals.

The New York Knicks won their opening night encounter against the Cleveland Cavaliers and then the next one against the Boston Celtics. Both impressive wins, even though their opponents struggled with some injuries.

However, the Knicks went on to lose their next 3 against solid Eastern Conference opponents. All of them were looking to make their mark at a time when some teams were bound to struggle.

Those losses raised concerns, but there was a belief that new head coach Mike Brown was working to get the team to play the way he wanted.

Thankfully, the team reversed course and won the next 3, with their win against the then-unbeaten Chicago Bulls, their most complete one.

The team added a few important pieces in the offseason, and it seems those players are starting to produce. Once they get on the same page, it should not be difficult to gun for the NBA Finals.
