New York Mets pitcher Kodai Senga’s name will again be missing from the roster following a recent left calf strain. The incident took place during their game against the Atlanta Braves where the team won with an 8-4 record.

Friday’s game marked his debut for the 2024 season after missing the first four months of the regular season games due to a right shoulder and triceps injury during spring training. Upon further examination, the ace right-hander has been put on a 15-day IL.

Kodai Senga stumbled on the field after running off the mound to give the infielders a chance to field an infield popup in the sixth inning. He immediately dropped to the ground, grabbing his left calf, and grimacing in pain.

He was immediately pulled out from the game and given medical attention. Senga was not available for media after the game. Even before MRI reports came out, the team was confident it was a calf injury and nothing major like an Achilles tendon. Manager Carlos Mendoza commented, “He’s done for the year, it’s fair to say.”

You hate to see it. Look, he was pretty impressive. Watching him pitch, the fastball, the splinter, he dominated today.

While the fans in Citi Field went silent over the incident, they also gave Senga a standing ovation. His teammates also congratulated him for giving the NY Mets the boost they needed to stand victorious against the Braves.

NY Mets teammates comment on Kodai Senga’s injury

While the New York Mets won the game 8-4, they also lost their star pitcher within the same day. Kodai Senga’s teammates are hoping to see him back on the field, probably by the playoff season.

‘The Troll’ Francisco Alvarez, the Mets catcher, commented how he “want him healthy”. He wishes to see more of his performance and play alongside the 31-year-old. When asked about Senga’s play, he said,

The same guy from last year – he was nasty.

Mets designated hitter J.D. Martinez commented,

It’s a tough piece to lose, but there’s no sense in dwelling on it.

Martinez said he’d miss playing a couple of games without Senga but hopes to see “he’s back by the playoffs”.  He noted how the Mets want to make it into the playoffs and “just got to keep it going” further in the season.
