Kris Boyd had a moment to forget at the start of the AFC Divisional round game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday. The Houston Texans cornerback lost his cool and shoved special teams coach Frank Ross.

Chiefs Nikko Remigio began the game with a 63-yard kick return, reaching deep into Texans’ territory. He missed a couple of tackles, including one from kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn, before Boyd brought him down to the ground.

The Texans defensive back seemed proud of the challenge which led to Remigio fumbling the ball. The Chiefs eventually recovered by running back Samaje Perine to keep the drive alive.

However, cameras caught Boyd angrily shoving special teams coach Frank Ross on the sidelines before the Chiefs readied the ball for the snap.

A different camera angle leading up to the shove revealed that Boyd threw his helmet on the ground before racing to the Texans’ dugout. The reason behind his behavior was unclear until the referee’s flag indicated that illegal play was involved.

No matter how much Boyd disagrees with the coach, players pushing a coach is an ugly sight to witness, especially in a high-voltage fixture like the divisional game.

Boyd’s outburst could have proved costly for the Texans, but the Chiefs settled with a field goal from Harrison Butker to start the scoring in the game.

Boyd joined the Texans in October 2023 and has been a big part player since then, coming on for relief duty in most games. In 2024 he recorded just 8 tackles all season. Before joining the Texans, he spent time with the Arizona Cardinals after the Minnesota Vikings placed him on injured reserve due to a shoulder injury.

Kris Boyd’s involvement with the first team’s game became limited after recovering from the injury, and he was subsequently released in 2023. He has played a total of 81 games since being drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings, logging 105 combined tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 3 pass deflections, and 2 forced fumbles.
